There's a particular kind of panic that happens when you're busy, the queue is growing and suddenly the connection disappears.
Nobody in the queue cares why the WiFi has gone down.
They just want to pay.
That's why offline selling matters.
POSable is designed to keep transactions moving when the connection drops, storing transactions locally and syncing them when you're back online.
So the technology problem doesn't automatically become a customer problem.
Because when you're busy, you don't want to be explaining:
"Sorry β€” our system's offline."
You want to keep serving people.
Keep taking payments.
Keep the queue moving.
The WiFi can stop.
The sale doesn't have to.
That's what practical technology should look like.

One thing that's easy to forget in retail:
Stock is cash.
Every box sitting on a shelf represents money you've already spent.
If it sells, great.
If it sits there for months, that money is still tied up in the business.
And that's why stock decisions are commercial decisions.
What sells quickly?
What's slowing down?
What are you buying too much of?
What keeps selling out?
Good inventory information helps you answer those questions with something better than a guess.
Because you don't necessarily need more stock.
You need the right stock, in the right quantities, at the right time.
That's when inventory becomes more than a back-office task.
It becomes a tool for making better business decisions.

The best system isn't the one with the most features.
It's the one your team actually uses.
I've seen plenty of systems that can supposedly do almost everything.
But if they're complicated, people find workarounds.
They write things down.
They keep spreadsheets.
They make manual checks.
They create their own little systems for getting things done.
And suddenly the software that's supposed to make the business easier is creating more work.
That's particularly frustrating in a small retail business.
Because the person using the system might also be serving customers, checking stock, ordering from suppliers and dealing with everything else that comes with running a business.
Technology should fit into the working day.
It shouldn't make the working day harder.
That's one of the principles behind POSable.
We're not interested in adding complexity just because we can.
We're trying to build something that gives traders the tools they need without making them fight the software to get their work done.
Keep retail simple.

Every sale leaves a clue.
What people wanted.
When they wanted it.
How much they bought.
What sold out.
What sat there.
The tricky bit isn't collecting all that information.
It's knowing what to do with it.
I've always thought good reporting should make a retail business easier to understand, not give the owner another spreadsheet to stare at.
You want to be able to look at what's happening and ask:
What does this tell me?
What should I do next?
That's a big part of what we're trying to achieve with POSable's reporting and http://AI.MEE.
Take the activity that's already happening in the business and turn it into useful information you can actually act on.
The data is there. The value is in seeing what it means.

Seasonal businesses don't have the luxury of doing the same thing every month.
Demand changes.
Weather changes.
Staff changes.
Stock changes.
That can make the business feel chaotic pretty quickly.
But changing circumstances don't mean everything has to be improvised.
You need enough structure to keep things under control β€” and enough visibility to know when something needs to change.
What worked last season?
What's moving now?
What needs ordering?
What can wait?
The more your business changes, the more valuable that visibility becomes.
Seasonal doesn't have to mean chaotic.

One of the realities of seasonal retail is that your team changes.
You might have people who know the business inside out.
And then someone new walks through the door for their first shift.
The system has to work for both.
I've learned that a good process isn't one that makes an experienced person look clever.
It's one that a new person can understand quickly β€” especially when the shop is busy.
Because when you're training staff, serving customers and trying to keep the business moving, you don't need another layer of complexity.
You need people to know what they're doing.
And you need to know what's happening in the business.
Simple enough for seasonal staff.
Powerful enough to manage real inventory.
That's the balance we built POSable around.

One day's sales can tell you what happened today.
But one day rarely tells you the whole story.
What changed over the month?
Which products are getting stronger?
Where are sales slipping?
Are the same patterns appearing again and again?
Those are the questions that become much more useful when you step back and look at a longer period.
That's where deeper reporting can make a real difference.
Instead of spending hours pulling numbers together, you can look at a month, quarter, half year or full year and start to see what's actually happening in the business.
Because the goal isn't to produce more reports.
It's to understand the business you're actually running.
That's the thinking behind http://AI.MEE reporting in POSable β€” turning the information your business is already generating into a clearer picture of performance and what deserves attention next.
Know where you stand.

Your best sellers aren't just a list of products that sold well.
They're clues.
They can tell you what customers are looking for.
Which price points are working.
Which categories deserve more attention.
What you need to keep available.
And sometimes the more interesting question is:
Why isn't something selling?
Because a sales report isn't useful just because it contains lots of numbers.
It's useful when it helps you ask better questions about the business.
What should you buy more of?
What needs promoting?
What is tying up cash?
What should you investigate?
That's when reporting stops being something you look at...
…and starts becoming something you use.
Good information helps you make better decisions about stock, range and promotions.
That's how reporting becomes strategy.

The cheapest option isn't always the cheapest option.
I've learned that one more than once.
Something can look inexpensive when you look at the price on the invoice β€” but what does it cost you to actually run it?
Lost sales.
Time spent fixing things.
Stock decisions made without good information.
Staff struggling with a system that isn't easy to use.
Extra complexity.
Those costs don't always appear on the invoice.
And for a small business, they matter.
That's why affordability has always meant more to us at POSable than simply having a low subscription price.
The technology needs to earn its place in the business.
It should make things simpler.
Give you better information.
Reduce unnecessary work.
And help you keep more of what you work hard to earn.
Because the cheapest system isn't necessarily the one with the lowest price.
It's the one that gives you the best value for the way you actually trade.

One of the most useful things a system can do for a busy retailer is help answer one simple question:
What needs my attention first?
Because retail throws a lot at you.
Low stock.
Slow sellers.
Busy days.
Quiet days.
Weather changes.
Supplier orders.
Customer offers.
Cashflow.
It can all feel important.
But if everything looks urgent, nothing is.
That's one of the ideas behind the way we're developing AI reporting in POSable.
The useful part isn't simply showing you more information.
It's helping you see what deserves attention now.
What needs action?
What can wait?
Where is there an opportunity?
That's the difference between having information and having useful information.
Less searching.
Less guessing.
More action.
