Would you know if this message was real?

Scam messages often begin with a new number, a broken or lost phone, and a request to continue the conversation elsewhere. The request for money may come later, once the sender has built some trust.

Before replying:

1. Stop
Do not rush because the message sounds urgent.

2. Check another way
Call the person using the number you already have, or contact another family member.

3. Don’t send money or codes
Never send money, gift cards, banking details, passwords or verification codes until you are certain who you are speaking to.

A useful family precaution is to agree a private question or phrase that can be used when somebody unexpectedly contacts you from a new number.
