🔐 Microsoft is moving away from SMS authentication. What does that mean for your business?

From February 2027, Microsoft-provided SMS and voice authentication will be retired, as Microsoft moves users towards stronger, phishing-resistant methods such as passkeys.

The biggest impact is likely to be felt by businesses that currently rely heavily on SMS for multi-factor authentication, particularly those that don’t provide employees with work mobiles.

🔐 Microsoft is moving customers to phishing-resistant authentication

Microsoft is moving Microsoft Entra ID customers away from SMS and voice authentication and making passkeys the default authentication experience.

📅 From 1 September 2026: Users currently using SMS or voice authentication will begin being prompted to register a passkey.

🚨 From 1 February 2027: Microsoft-provided SMS and voice authentication will be retired.
