Another year, another set of jerseys and graphics for the Manchester Storm, however this time celebrating 30 years since the formation of the original club in 1995.
Some will point to the fact that there was a large gap between 2003 when the original Storm folded, and 2015 when the current Storm reformed. Factually they are correct, but there’s a whole lot more to celebrating 30 years than just the straight facts.
30 years ago, the landscape of sport in the city changed, and ice hockey was introduced to Manchester, in the state of the art Nynex Arena ( as it’s known now). Sunday nights became hockey nights at the Arena, and lifelong memories were made. For the really hardcore hockey fans who already knew about the sport, this was the NHL coming to Manchester. For the rest of us, it was the start of something magical. Players became heroes, and the team became Champions.
It inspired a generation of ice & roller hockey players (myself included), teams and leagues across the whole city. Some are still playing to this day, some even went on to play for the club they supported as kids. I still count some of my greatest memories as ones made through the sport, and some of my closet friends are teammates I played alongside. None of that would have been possible if it wasn’t for the Storm 30 years ago.
What happens in the next 30 years is yet to be seen, but there’s no doubt about the legacy the club started 30 years ago in 1995.
