That's the average UK shopping scam loss. Not catastrophic. Not worth a news headline. Just enough to hurt but small enough for banks to quietly refund.

And that's exactly why it keeps happening.

7 million UK adults were scammed in the past year (Citizens Advice, 2025). Online shopping scams were the #1 fraud type. Social media was the contact method in 42% of cases.

But most victims never report it after getting refunded. Too embarrassed. Too relieved. Too busy moving on.

So the scammer? Still operating. Still advertising on Instagram. Still targeting the next person.

I built Retail Checker because I was one of those invisible statistics. £75 Instagram shoe scam. Got refunded. Never reported it. Became part of the problem.

The system rewards reactive cleanup, not prevention. Banks refund victims. Victims stay quiet. Data stays incomplete. Scammers face zero consequences.

We can't refund our way out of this. We need to stop people paying scammers in the first place.

I clicked an Instagram ad for shoes. Lost £75. Spent three weeks hassling my bank for a refund.

I got my money back. But here's the thing nobody talks about: I never reported it to Report Fraud.

Why would I? I felt embarrassed. The bank had refunded me. What would reporting it change?

Turns out, millions of people make the same calculation. We get scammed, get refunded, stay silent. The bank ticks a box. The scammer carries on. Nothing changes.

Citizens Advice found that 42% of scam victims were contacted through social media. Norton reported UK shopping scams rose 416% in Q4 2025. Instagram and Facebook ads look EXACTLY like real retailers.

If it's too good to be true then it probably is.
However, scammers these days aren't selling things that are 'too good to be true'.

They cleverly price their goods around the real price of similar goods/sellers.
They make their websites look as realistic as possible so that you don't question anything... except you do but you can't quite put your finger on why.

And, then you over-ride your instincts because - why wouldn't it be real, you're going mad.

Scammers revel in the psychology of it all and get richer.
Meanwhile, you're doubting yourself and getting poorer.

We can take away the stress. Shopping should be fun.

Did you know that we pull in Google Reviews as well as confirm that the company is legitimate. Sometimes legitimate businesses exist but they don't serve customers well and shoppers consider it to be a scam. By using you can get all the information BEFORE you risk your money.
