🔥 Business Owners & Sole Traders – How Many of These IT Myths Are Putting You at Risk?

Technology should make life easier, not stressful. But every week we hear small businesses repeating the same IT and cyber security myths that quietly put them at risk.

Here are a few of the big ones 👇

💭 “I’m too small to be a target.”
Hackers don’t pick victims by size. They use automated tools that scan the internet for easy targets. If you have an email address, you’re on their radar.

💭 “Hackers only attack big companies.”
Most attacks are automatic, not personal. Smaller businesses are often hit first because they have fewer defences.

💭 “It’s cheaper to fix things when they break.”
Downtime and data loss can cost far more than prevention. A little maintenance now saves a lot of money later.

💭 “Using my personal email for business is fine.”
Personal accounts don’t have proper security or data controls. Lose access once, and you could lose everything.

💭 “Two-factor authentication is too much hassle.”
It takes seconds to use, but it stops most account takeovers. Small effort, massive protection.

💭 “Antivirus is enough.”
It helps, but phishing and stolen passwords often bypass antivirus. You need layers like secure email, backups and 2FA.

💭 “Everything’s in the cloud, so I don’t need backups.”
Cloud services can still lose or delete files. Always keep your own copy somewhere safe.

💭 “GDPR doesn’t apply to me.”
If you hold names, phone numbers or emails, it does. Even small traders and charities have legal data duties.

💭 “IT support is only for big companies.”
Not true. Modern IT support can be affordable and flexible. Avefinity was built specifically for smaller organisations.

⚙️ We’ve covered all 20 myths in our latest guide – each explained clearly with links to trusted sources like the NCSC, ICO and FSB.
If you’re serious about keeping your business safe in 2025, this is worth ten minutes of your time.
