Introducing H.I.V.E. Essentials — a tutorial series for H.I.V.E. in Grasshopper3D that walks through the three simulation engines built into H.I.V.E.: Cellular Automata, Network-Based, and Physics-Based.

Step-by-step, each video breaks down the components, parameters, and workflows you’ll need to build your own simulations — whether you’re modeling grid-based flows, circulation networks, or force-driven behaviors. The series is designed to help you get hands-on with the plugin and unlock the full potential of pedestrian and social interaction modeling in your projects.

What if you could test how sociable your space is—before it’s even built? With H.I.V.E.’s network simulation engine, you can. This analysis compares four versions of the same urban layout, each one tuned for a different level of sociability—from isolated to highly interactive.

The result? A clear, visual understanding of how spatial design impacts pedestrian flow, gathering behavior, and human connection. No guesswork. Just data-driven insight to design better, more connected spaces.

H.I.V.E. v1.0.0 is officially live.

This update brings a major step forward in making pedestrian simulation more accessible and powerful for architects and designers.

All three simulation engines—CA, Network, and Physics—now follow a unified structure, making setup easier and comparisons more intuitive.

We’ve also introduced streamlined UI/UX controls and added new advanced parameters to give you deeper insight into how people move and socialize through space.

Design smarter. Simulate faster. Analyze deeper.

How does the design of a space influence the way people move and connect?

In this simulation, H.I.V.E.’s physics-based pedestrian model analyzes how people interact within an existing environment. By mapping real-time flow and density, it reveals where design supports social interaction and where it could do better. Use these insights to guide smarter, more socially responsive interventions.

Open spaces thrive when they’re designed with people in mind.

In this simulation, H.I.V.E.'s Cellular Automata method analyzes a large open environment—revealing how people interact, gather, and flow across space during a high-energy scenario like a festival or public event.

Rather than guessing how a space will work, H.I.V.E. shows you. Test layout ideas, program changes, and pathways to create spaces that are dynamic, intuitive, and socially engaging.

Urban environments are complex—but they don’t have to be overwhelming.

H.I.V.E.’s Network Simulation breaks down a dense urban space into a clear graph of nodes and paths. It helps uncover how people move, where they gather, and how social interactions are shaped by space.

By simplifying complexity, H.I.V.E. reveals new insights into circulation, bottlenecks, and moments of connection—helping designers make more informed, people-focused decisions.

Cities and buildings are never static—programs evolve, spaces transform, and human behavior adapts in response. With H.I.V.E.’s Cellular Automata simulation, you can analyze how shifts in spatial programs impact pedestrian movement and social interactions over time.
Here, you can see how H.I.V.E. simulates the movement and social interactions for the same environment at three different moments, each with different spatial configurations and programs. As activity hubs shift, so do movement patterns and gathering spaces. These insights help designers create more adaptive, socially responsive environments.

H.I.V.E. v0.2.0 is here!

We’re excited to launch the latest update to H.I.V.E., introducing a new physics-based pedestrian simulation that integrates social interactions into traditional crowd flow modeling.

With this update, H.I.V.E. expands the capabilities of socially-driven pedestrian modeling by affording more detailed analysis of localized spaces. The new simulation factors in collisions, momentum, and spatial constraints alongside how people respond to social forces, spatial awareness, and group dynamics in real-time. Now, movement is influenced not just by physical constraints like walls and obstacles, but also by the social characteristics of a space.

H.I.V.E. v0.2.0 offers a more human-centered approach to pedestrian modeling, helping designers create environments that enhance social interaction and engagement. Try H.I.V.E. yourself by visiting our website to download.

Discover H.I.V.E.'s cellular autonoma-based social pedestrian simulation!
One of three groundbreaking workflows in our H.I.V.E. plug-in, the cellular autonoma-based simulation method operates on medium-scale scenarios by introducing spatial characteristics to agents and programs in a two-dimensional space. Agents follow simple, rule-based behaviors, producing emergent movement and interaction patterns. This approach incorporates factors like proximity, obstacles, and environmental influences, enabling the modeling of complex dynamics and providing insights into how agents navigate and interact within designed environments.

We are excited to announce the launch of the official H.I.V.E. website, your central hub for our socially-driven pedestrian simulation tools. Here, you’ll find an overview of H.I.V.E.’s unique approach, a showcase of its simulation methods, real-world applications, and detailed documentation and example files to help you get started. You can also download H.I.V.E. on FoodforRhino and see how it can enhance your design workflow.

H.I.V.E. integrates network, cellular autonoma, and physics-based pedestrian simulations with social behaviors to empower architects and urban designers to better understand how to their projects encourage organic interactions, fostering better public spaces and user experiences.
