Following Barnet’s Borough of Culture bid, we continued our work with the council as creative production partner for Light + Flight.

Inspired by Barnet’s aviation heritage and shaped by the stories of its diverse communities, the festival brings together art, music, film, craft, performance, food and more to explore themes of community, movement and identity.

Over the past year, we’ve worked alongside local artists, organisations and cultural groups to bring the programme to life, championing local creativity and opening up new opportunities for participation across the borough.

Join us next month in Barnet and experience it for yourself!

In 2024, we worked with Barnet on its bid for London Borough of Culture 2027.

Through ‘Our Barnet Canvas’, more than 1500 residents, artists, businesses, communities and cultural organisations helped shape a vision for culture in the borough, sharing what makes Barnet special and what they wanted to achieve locally.

Although Barnet wasn’t awarded the London of Borough of Culture title, the strength of the bid was recognised through the Mayor of London’s Cultural Impact Award, securing funding to take many of the ideas forward.

That work laid the foundations for Light + Flight: a year-long programme celebrating creativity, connection and belonging across Barnet.

Richmond Town Centre Vision 3/3

Richmond is already bringing the Vision to life through quick wins and meanwhile activation. One of the first steps is Centre Stage Richmond – a free multi-arts festival reclaiming George Street and Whittaker Square.

Centre Stage returns for its second year this July. Across the weekend of 17–19 July, Richmond town centre comes alive with live performances. On Saturday 18th - curated and produced by HemingwayDesign - the streets will become a stage, canvas and playground filled with music, theatre, food, art and joyful public participation.

Centre Stage is an example of how the Vision can be tested and experienced in the short term, while longer-term projects are developed.

Richmond Town Centre Vision 2/3

Where the Vision defines long-term ambition, the Activation Plan focuses on what can be done now and next to bring that ambition to life.

It identifies projects that will create more inclusive streets and public spaces, diversify town centre and riverside uses, better serve young people and families, and strengthen Richmond’s role as both a local town centre and a wider destination.

An initial £1.5 million budget has been approved to progress four priority projects:

• Whittaker Square and Avenue – creating a greener, more purposeful public space linking the town centre and riverside.
• George Street – transforming the street into a more pedestrian-friendly leisure and retail destination, addressing air pollution through a reduction in vehicular movement, increasing greenery, and increasing opportunities for social and cultural activity, play, and business spill-out.
• Little Green – delivering a high-quality, nature-sensitive play space in the town centre.
• Wayfinding Strategy – improving connections between the town centre, green spaces, and riverside, while strengthening Richmond’s identity through public art, interpretation and storytelling.

HemingwayDesign has been working with the alongside and Urban Movement, to develop a Vision for Richmond town centre.

Richmond’s challenge isn’t its reputation. Known for its beautiful riverside, green spaces, and rich history, it already has a strong identity. The opportunity now is to broaden perceptions, showcase a more diverse offer, attract new audiences, support future generations, and respond to climate and environmental challenges.

The Richmond Town Centre Vision sets out what the town can become over the next 5, 10 and 15+ years, anchored by three Place-shaping Pillars:

-Global City Energy Meets Market Town Charm
-Space to Breathe: Escapism, Exploration & Enrichment
-Natural Leaders: Champions of Environmental Action & Social Value

Together, these pillars provide a framework for future investment, decision-making and change in Richmond town centre.
