That Christmas Call

Winter is upon us now,
Christmas almost here,
Loneliness felt deeply,
This special time of year.

Our parents told us stories,
They taught us to believe,
So we would be excited for,
Santa's visit Christmas Eve.

Now the time has come for us,
To repay that loving care,
Especially at Christmas time
Let them know we're always there.

And if our lives are busy,
And we cannot make it home,
Just make that Christmas call,
To say "we love you", on the phone.

An ode to the Poppy

Symbols are there to remind us,
Of important events and times,
Shapes or colours or objects,
Even the words of a rhyme.

Some events are so important,
They are given an icon or brand,
Whose shape and colour remind us,
Of events historic and grand.

November has its own symbol,
No single nation must own,
Its petals as red as life's blood,
Its centre as dark as a stone

It acts as an annual reminder
Of a people's great sacrifice,
Many minds and bodies broken,
Those who paid, the 'ultimate price'.

So when you see poppies on sale,
Please give, to say, 'thank-you',
Remember those brave men and woman,
Who 'did their bit', for you.

Come on England!!

An ode to the Lionesses

Once again the final comes around, Lionesses made it through,
We'd be lying if we said, we hadn't had a doubt or two!
Spain awaits them once again, kitted out in Red and Yellow,
World champions, 'La Furia Roja', England hope they're feeling mellow!

England hopes their form has changed, they're not so good this time,
'Cause they will need a lot of luck, to make it over the line!,
I suspect they'll simply 'park the bus', and hope for a lucky break,
Or retain so much possession, that the Spanish make mistakes.

History was made last time, in that world final overseas,
But, as everybody knows, England's fans are hard to please,
They won't care if a Penalty shoot out, is the only way to win,
Ghosts of the past, laid to rest, 'that cup's coming home' again!

Sorry...see BT website for details (p.s. NOT just affecting BT and EE!!)

Happy St Georges Day

An Ode To St George

Legend tells of a brave Knight Of Old,
Who sleighed a Dragon, fierce and bold,
This legend passed on as a child's story,
A metaphor for old English Chivalry.

So on April twenty third, On this sceptre'd Isle,
His story's recounted, with the wryest of smiles,
Children draw pictures of a Dragon and Knight,
White flags with red crosses, a glorious sight.

So England's people can take pride in their land,
Their jewel in the sea will always stand,
'Gainst tyrants and bullies who envy our ways,
Our freedom of speech, our sense of fair play.

This natural fortress has all that we need,
Great soil for the farmers, fish in our seas,
Though it rains all the time, there's one guarantee,
There'll be plenty of water for a nice cup of tea!
