Back in March, we teamed up with street photographer Craig Nelson to create "Women and the Geography of Fear", a project exploring how women experience different places in the city after dark.
Over the past few weeks we've been sharing the portraits and stories. Today, we're excited to share the full project.
Alongside the photographs and personal testimonies, our advisor Alina Ristea added crime maps and analysis, comparing recorded violent crime with perceptions of safety at each location.
One thing became clear: what makes a place feel unsafe isn't always reflected in crime statistics alone. Lighting, visibility, isolation, urban design, and lived experience all play a role.
A huge thank you to Craig, Alina, and all the incredible women who shared their stories, including Yijing, Kiran, Alanis, and others who helped bring this project to life ❤️
