The 2026 Canadian Grand Prix delivered everything Montreal usually promises: chaos, strategy swings, and heartbreak. Andrea Kimi Antonelli stole the show with a composed and ruthless drive to victory after teammate George Russell retired while leading with an engine failure. The Mercedes battle had been shaping up as an instant classic before reliability changed the race completely.

Behind him, Lewis Hamilton produced arguably his strongest Ferrari performance yet to take second, while Max Verstappen grabbed another hard-fought podium after late pressure and contact. McLaren’s miserable afternoon — including a retirement for Lando Norris — added even more drama to a race that never really settled down.

Fast, unpredictable, and packed with turning points, this felt like one of the standout races of the season so far.

Mercedes stole the spotlight in a dramatic qualifying session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with George Russell snatching pole position right at the end of Q3. His final lap was nearly flawless, edging teammate Kimi Antonelli in a tense all-Mercedes front row lockout. Lando Norris stayed in the fight throughout the session and will start from third after showing strong pace for McLaren.

The session had everything Formula 1 fans love — late improvements, razor-thin margins, and

plenty of pressure under the Montreal lights. Russell’s confidence on low fuel looked unbeatable when it mattered most, and the momentum now swings firmly toward Mercedes heading into race day.

If qualifying was any indication, Sunday’s race could turn into a straight fight between Mercedes and McLaren, with strategy and tyre management likely to decide everything.
