The findings serve as a stark reminder of the current imbalance in the job market, with certain sectors desperately seeking workers that are not readily available. Factors such as skills mismatches, the aftermath of Brexit, and workers leaving the labour force due to long-term sickness have been identified as contributing to the engineering shortages.
It's worth noting that the UK economy heavily relies on the services sector, which contributes the majority of its output. This reality creates fierce competition for manufacturing firms, often resulting in recruitment roadblocks. Richard Austin, head of manufacturing at BDO, acknowledges the multiple challenges faced by manufacturing companies, including those arising from Brexit, shortages in skilled labour, pandemic-related supply chain delays, and significant energy price rises due to geopolitical events.

Despite these obstacles, the manufacturing job market in the UK is showing promising signs. Contrary to the long-held narrative of inevitable decline, the report reveals that six out of eight English regions experienced growth in their factory workforce last year. For example, Yorkshire and Humberside witnessed a substantial increase, with manufacturing jobs rising from 270,000 to 316,000 between December 2021 and December 2022.
London and the South East region boast the highest volume of manufacturing roles in the UK, accounting for approximately 4% of the region's employment. Moreover, they have experienced a remarkable 19% uptick in output since before the Covid-19 pandemic, outpacing other regions.
