Save Tidemill is a documentary made by one of our directors highlighting the development issues currently happening in Deptford. Unfortunately last week Lewisham Council decided to demolish the gardens and social housing. However this is not the end of the battle. Look out for a three part film screening regarding gentrification in Deptford in the near future.

Hit us up at TLB for thoughts/questions.

Levantes

“We make pictures that move and can be interacted with. When me a Eleni came together, we are actually very different people, but it was finding a language between us which was our creativity. We have a common enjoyment of the visual, the grotesque and the beautiful. A lot of the stuff that we use is from the pound shop, we where in Peckham, really it was like going into those shops thats where we get our inspiration. On the high street there’s a really weird underwear shop. I think it’s supposed to be sexy, it’s really not, but it’s fascinating. There’s quite a lot of those places where the things are cheap and disposable, but beautiful. So I think actually the area gave us the places that we shop and therefore gave us our creative tools.”

Amie Touray

“We started in the markets. The idea was to introduce to contemporary African print clothing and make it available to the general public. Usually African clothing its not that easy to get. It’s super cool, everybody’s wearing it, every bodies welcome because why not! I feel really proud when I see people wearing my stuff. Like wow, I’m having a positive impact on someones life and I think thats what we live for.”

Sam Singleton

"I’m a motion graphic designer. I’m inspired by music videos the way they sync to music and how they interpret motion. People can feel the song by whats on the screen. I feel like graphics is a much needed thing because without it readability of things, the accessibility of information, wouldn’t be as it should be. People wouldn’t know how to compose things in a way that provides an easier and more creative way for people to understand."

Prem Sheila Krishna Kumae

"I just started my company in tatted lace jewellery and other things. Tatting is a type of lace, like crochet, but we don’t use needle it is done by hand. It used to be very popular in my grandmothers time, it’s coming back now. South London is my home, I got two homes one in India and one here. I moved here 33 years ago and all the time I’ve been in the same house, my children and grandchildren have been born and grown up in it. I love this place. South London for me it’s the freedom to be yourself, it’s very comfortable. Like coming back and relaxing with every type of language, people and culture. Thats why I don’t feel like a stranger."

"I’ve always done art related things since I was really little, but I never thought as myself as an artist. I started studying anthropology and I just realised how much the arts are a way of communicating. A way of showing the interconnectedness between people. It just clicked, performative arts and anthropology as a means of understanding how we are in relation to the ‘other’. Suddenly it was all connected and all so powerfulI. It changed me intellectually, now I’m trying to understand how in a community performative arts can make a change."

"My zine Glu3 is a fusion of art science and sorcery. Through Glu3 I’ve created a splinter group called the PVA which stands for the ‘Positive Vibrations Assosiation’. I’ve been here since 1978. The history here has so much mystery. People are in a box, blow the frame off go off the page, I don’t want fine lines I want depth!"

Liza Sapara Grant

"I’m a photographer and I like collage and paintings, it’s a way for me to output all the energy I consume every day. Conversations with people, pain, struggle, happiness, I like to get that out. Early 2000’s, there wasn’t as much noise and hussle and bussle. Now if you just walk around Greenwich, where I’m from, the art is very much more in your face and I like that. I think I like how all this globalisation as helped artists come to the surface."

Jess Childs

"I’m really into street photography. I draw from photos a lot so I see myself is an illustrator but more of a documentative. A lot of my inspiration is from South East London, it’s undergoing rapid regeneration and my work tries to immortalise slices of London life that may soon be lost. I’m finding it interesting the social changes that are happening the area and where I sit in that. God knows what it’ll be like in a couple of years!"

Our music programmer Franklin Dawson wrote this review for Loose Lips about the phenomenal Binker and Moses gig at Total Refreshment Centre.

"The music exhibited tonight is ecstatic, rapturous, even spiritual."
