The view from our office! 🌅📸

Field-based engineering coordinator Andy has shared some of the brilliant sights he’s captured while working across the Northwest.

From Arnside sunsets and the Lancaster ‘Wonky House’ to Dunsop Bridge and cherry blossom at Preston exchange, there are plenty of reasons to stop and take in the view.

Thanks for sharing your camera roll with us, Andy! 👏

Why do we still use poles? Our Pole Nerds are back to explain 🤓

They might seem simple, but poles have played a huge part in helping us bring to communities across the UK.

They’re often faster and more cost-effective than digging new underground ducts, create less disruption and can help us reach rural, coastal and spread-out communities sooner.

That’s helped us make Full Fibre available to more than 23 million homes and businesses, that's around two thirds of the UK 🙌

We always use our existing poles or underground network where we can, but sometimes new poles are needed when there’s no practical alternative.

And did you know the first poles were erected in the 1840s to carry telegraph wires? That’s where the name “telegraph pole” came from!

🏆 Who's winning County Durham's race?

More than 320,000 homes and businesses across County Durham can now access our gigabit-capable network, but some are racing ahead while others are yet to make the switch.

At the top of the table, Hurworth-on-Tees and Croft-on-Tees are leading the way, with around 68% of people who've got access already upgrading to Full Fibre.

But despite the network being available, take-up remains much lower in parts of Stockton-on-Tees and Ferryhill.

The infrastructure is there. Now it's over to local communities to make the most of it. 🚀

How has Britain changed the way it uses broadband?

Our network data reveals some fascinating trends:
🎮 Major gaming updates can create some of the biggest traffic spikes on our network
⚽ Live sporting events continue to drive huge increases in streaming activity
🏡 More homes are switching to as they look for reliable connectivity to support work, entertainment and everyday life

In fact, Full Fibre usage across our network increased by 37% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year.

Trevor Linney, Director of Network Technology, explains what these trends tell us about how Britain is connecting today and how we're preparing for tomorrow: https://www.openreach.com/news/britains-broadband-habits-are-changing-our-network-data-shows-us-how/

By day, Liam keeps connected as one of our fibre engineers. By weekend, he's representing England on the touch rugby pitch 🏉

After winning the 2026 England Touch Nationals with South West Touch, Liam was crowned the tournament's Most Valuable Player, an incredible achievement in his first season with the senior men's team 🏆

Since then, he's gone on to represent England at the European Touch Championships, helping his team secure a gold medal and demonstrating the same dedication, teamwork and determination that he brings to Openreach every day 🥇

Congratulations, Liam, on an outstanding year of achievements - both on and off the pitch! 👏💙

Giving back, one donation at a time!

Our Internal Comms team recently spent a rewarding day at Oxfam Online Batley, helping sort through over 500kg of donated clothing and accessories.

Every item processed has the potential to make a real difference, with funds raised supporting initiatives such as providing clean water, helping families grow their own food, and delivering vital food parcels to communities facing hardship.

The day was filled with teamwork, plenty of sorting, and a few unexpected highlights – including the chance to try on some colourful costumes donated by The Masked Singer UK 🥕🫛🌶️

A huge thank you to the Oxfam Batley team for having us. We're proud to support the incredible work they do and to play a small part in helping create positive change ✨

🚨 Just six months to go until the Big Switch Off.

James Lilley, Director of Customer Migrations, explains why businesses need to start preparing now for the retirement of the UK's old phone network on 31 January 2027.

The PSTN has supported the UK for around 150 years, but as we move towards a modern, digital future, organisations still using services connected to the network need to understand what the switch-off means for them.

If your business relies on phone lines, payment terminals, alarm systems or other connected services, don't leave it until the last minute.

📞 Contact your communications provider to understand your options and put a migration plan in place before the deadline.

1,112km walked, ran, cycled and rowed for an incredible cause! 💪

This month, our Wi******er team came together to take on Project 1112 in the New Forest.

The distance represents the journey between the most southern and northern Neonatal Intensive Care Units supported by New Life, helping to raise awareness and funds for the amazing work they do.

And we’re proud to say… they smashed the challenge!

A massive well done to everyone who took part, and to CrossFit Iron Duke for lending the rowing machines 💙
