Coffee grows in well-shaded areas. The coffee pickers of Mozambique have made use of this advantage and started planting coffee in the mountain of Gorongosa. With each coffee plant, a tree is planted on the mountain to help shade the coffee. With the plantation and harvesting of coffee, coffee pickers aim to restore Mozambique’s forests and ecosystems. The community surrounding the Gorongosa forest has also gradually become interested in the planting of coffee since it provides them with employment opportunities and ways to support themselves. Now, the Gorongosa forest has become home to 300,000 coffee plants, 400,000 cashew trees, hundreds of beehives, and most importantly hundreds of jobs.

However, they worry that an increase in tourism levels will damage the Red Sea’s fragile ecosystem. In 2019, the City’s municipal authorities banned the use of single-use plastics. The Conference hopes to raise awareness about the ecosystem’s fragility and the importance of taking care of it in sustainable ways.
