🤯 Is the number 3 halfway between 1 and 9?
Your first instinct is probably 5.
And you’re right… if you’re thinking in a straight line.
We were all taught that halfway between 1 and 9 is:
1 → 5 → 9
because you’re adding the same amount each time:
* 1 + 4 = 5
* 5 + 4 = 9
But here’s a different way to think about it.
What if “halfway” meant taking equal multiplications instead of equal additions?
Then the journey becomes:
* 1 Ă— 3 = 3
* 3 Ă— 3 = 9
Now 3 is the halfway point!
So there are actually two kinds of “middle”:
âž• Additive (linear) middle: 5
✖️ Multiplicative (logarithmic) middle: 3
This isn’t just a math trick.
Humans naturally think in ratios more often than we realize. We perceive sound, brightness, wealth, population, earthquakes, and even enormous numbers on something closer to a logarithmic scale than a linear one.
That’s why a jump from 1 million to 1 billion feels huge, but the difference between 1 billion and 2 billion often doesn’t feel twice as large, even though it’s a much bigger increase than a million.
Sometimes, changing the way you measure something changes the answer.
The lesson? There isn’t always just one “right” way to think about a problem. Sometimes, a different perspective reveals a whole new kind of truth.
💬 Did you know there could be two different “halfway” points depending on how you measure?
