Get Safe Online published the findings of a recent study and the risks parents are worried about when allowing their children to game online. Often there are very few restrictions in place for children who play games online and this leads to a lot of parental anxiety around the idea and whether you should allow your child to play games online. Parents worry about risks such as; playing with people who have criminal motives, games with inappropriate age ratings, access to online purchases that ring up bills on parent’s cards and the amount of the time spent gaming may distract from other activities such as exercise, socialising and schoolwork.
Here are some tips about how to make your little gamer’s experience safer:
- be open with your child and have conversations about the risks that come with gaming
- educate your children about the importance of personal detail remaining private, details such as finances, home addresses and parent information.
- Explain that not everyone they meet online is who they may seem to be, some may have other intentions than being friends.
- Tell your children to respond to threatening or abusive behaviour and to report any such problems to you immediately.
- Set limits and monitor screen time in order to ensure that gaming does not distract from other activities.
- Check the age restrictions of the games your child plays to avoid exposure to inappropriate content.
- Do not give your child payment details as extra purchases can add up to a large bill!
Let us know if you have shared any of the above fears and how to you ensure that your child has a safer gaming experience?
