On-screen data visualisation sequence, built for the factual broadcast programme ‘ How Do Animals Do That’ running on TV.

Visualising data for broadcast is a different discipline to brand infographics. The pacing is driven by the edit, not the data. Every graphic has a fixed window of screen time, and it has to communicate within that window whether the viewer is ready or not.

I built this sequence around the edit first, the data second. The series as a whole had several different bespoke graphic requirements and data visualisations were commonly used throughout in several episodes.

Drop a comment if you work in factual TV production and let me know how you create these.

Lower third animation system, built for the multi-episode broadcast TV series ‘How Do Animals Do That’. I designed this along with Nikalas Catlow as a complete system, not a collection of individual graphics.

Every name, title and location credit had to feel like it belonged to the same visual world, whether it appeared in episode one or episode forty.

That kind of consistency required designing the rules before the elements. The fiftieth lower third had to look as deliberate as the first.

These lower thirds matched the rest of the series graphics in tone ans style perfectly.

A brand film is not a longer advertisement. When done right, it makes a prospect feel in three minutes what would otherwise take three meetings to communicate. We have seen brand films directly referenced in sales conversations. They close deals.

Most businesses think video marketing starts with a camera. It doesn’t. It starts with a question: what do you actually want people to feel, think and do after they’ve watched?

Before a single frame is shot, before a location is scouted or a script is written, the most important work is happening on paper, defining your brand’s narrative architecture, identifying the emotional hooks that make your audience stop scrolling, and mapping exactly how your story connects to the commercial outcome you’re trying to achieve.

This is what separates brands that produce forgettable content from brands that build genuine audience relationships. At Flayr FX, brand storytelling strategy is where every project begins. We work with you to understand your business, your customers and your goals before we ever pick up a camera. We define the core message that needs to live at the heart of every piece of content you create. We identify the tension, the transformation and the proof points that make your story worth telling. And we build a strategic framework that gives every video you produce a clear job to do, awareness, trust, conversion or advocacy so nothing is created without purpose.

Because the truth is, a beautifully shot video with the wrong story is an expensive mistake. And a strategically sound story told with craft and intention is one of the most powerful assets your business can own. If you’re investing in video without investing in strategy first, you’re building on sand. Let’s build on something solid.

Broadcast TV graphics package: I built this from scratch for the factual TV series ‘How Do Animals Do That’ working with WAG Entertainment, designing every element of the visual language the show would speak across its entire run with Nikalas Catlow, the show’s development producer. The important things I learned on this job were when you’re working at this scale that consistency is everything. I wasn’t just making individual graphics look good, I was building a system that had to hold up across every episode, segment and transition at full broadcast specs. Not an easy task! When a package like this works, the audience never notices it. This is what we were working towards at WAG Entertainment and we got there. If your production needs a motion designer who understands broadcast from the inside, let’s talk.

Motion Design is something that is so important in what we do. It is the framework and infrastructure to the films we make. It's sometimes overlooked as an optional extra and in some cases, depending on what is being made, it can be.

There has to be a purpose to it, a reason for it, a function for it. It should only be employed with thought behind it's integration.

Most people think of animation when they think of Motion Design. Is this it or is it more? It's more and a lot more. Animation is the 'motion' part of motion design. But there is also graphic design, typography, compositing, visual arts, video manipulation, colour, sound and much more that all play a part in it.

When clients come to us to make a film, our specialist knowledge in motion design brings with it a strong sense of knowing exactly where it fits into their story.

We can advise, where it adds value, where it advances the message and storytelling, how it fits with the narrative and where it's needed. We also know when it's not needed and when it's irrelevant.

When used right, motion design can be amazing in a film. If it looks and feels like it belongs there and it is a natural part of it, not out-of-place then it will do what it's made for.

We've put together a practical PDF guide called 'Motion Graphics for Content Creators' that breaks down:
– what motion graphics actually are
– when motion graphics should be used
– how to use motion design properly across social media, websites, and online video
– how to avoid common mistakes that reduce effectiveness

It's not just for solo content creators, it is useful for businesses and brands who would like to understand a bit more about how and why they might need to use it.
