A celebrated illustrator, writer and environmental campaigner, nickhayesillustration is the author of graphic novels and the non-fiction nature writing of The Book of Trespass. In 2020, he was a co-founder of the Right to Roam campaign for public access to rural land.

For the latest issue of Goodwood Magazine, Nick deployed his unique graphic style to pay tribute to British bats, which are finding refuge at Goodwood. It’s thought that 15 of the 18 UK-resident bats species may be found on, or passing through, the Goodwood Estate.

In June, female bats usually give birth to a single baby, called a pup.

’s Members’ Meetings are always special, but today’s, the 83rd, promises to be one for the ages. Jenson Button, the 2009 F1 World Champion, will return to the cockpit of his title-winning Brawn GP car for a scintillating demonstration around the Goodwood Motor Circuit. Ahead of the occasion, we spoke with the motorsports legend for the latest issue of Goodwood Magazine, and despite having retired from racing only weeks earlier, he’s excited to get behind the wheel. “The love for racing is still there,” he told us, “and that’s why I’m still doing historic races. That’s why I’m going to be at Members’ Meeting and Revival: because I still love racing. It’s just that I have to cut back on races that I’m not really excited about.”

World Art Day – which falls each year on Leonardo Da Vinci’s birthday, April 15  – seems a fitting time to celebrate the first birthday of Goodwood Art Foundation. We’ve been lucky enough to work with the Foundation on a series of stories for Magazine, including featuring the inaugural exhibition by and more recently the work of sound . Next up, the bold and brilliant work of Yayoi Kusama, featuring in the summer exhibition that opens next month.

"Remember, remember, the 5th of November”. Happy Bonfire Night– a moment to recall some of the many splendid firework displays at Goodwood, from November events at The Kennels to the amazing finales at Festival of Speed. As is often the case with Goodwood, there’s real heritage here – and a great backstory… For back in 1749, the 2nd Duke of Richmond put on a a legendary display on the River Thames opposite his London home, Richmond House – using fireworks originally bought by George II to accompany the very first performance of Handel’s Music of Fireworks… Only the King’s event was a total washout and the drenched fireworks didn’t explode. The Duke, however, bought up the whole supply, dried them out – and put on his own spectacular show – surely the firework display of the (18th) century.

We’re excited about the new show at the National Portrait Gallery, Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World, curated by Robin Muir and previewed in the latest issue of Goodwood Magazine (see link in bio).

Beaton was a man of many parts - an Oscar-winning costume and set designer, witty columnist and waspish diarist - and a former Bright Young Thing from the 20s who spent the Swinging 60s hanging out with Mick Jagger and David Bailey.

“In the end, it’s for his photography that he should be remembered,” says Muir – recalling the extraordinary impact of the NPG’s 1968 Beaton show. “It changed how people saw Beaton and it changed how people viewed photography”… As a visual feast, surely – on at the National Portrait Gallery, London, until 11 January 2026.

It's always cheering to see a much-loved hotel restored in all its glory – especially when it's a client and you've been on a little of the journey with them. For more than a century and a half, Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa has been one of Europe’s most celebrated grand hotels – an icon of luxurious hospitality in the elegant spa town of Baden-Baden, beside the Black Forest. Two years in the making, this has been the most gentle and thoughtful makeovers, as befits a grande-dame, and we can’t wait to stay. “With this renovation, we haven’t just refreshed a hotel - we’ve reignited its spirit," says Timo Gruenert, CEO of Oetker Hotels.

From little butterflies made with gemstones to a whopping great aquamarine ring and some exquisitely delicate tourmaline ear-rings, we love featuring jewellery at Uncommonly, whether we're art-directing and photographing it or simply commissioning stories from some of our favourite writers – Maria Doulton on the best men’s jewellery, Ming Liu’s take on bejewelled sunglasses and Jill Newman on why pink diamonds are forever.

As Frieze Masters opens its doors, we’re very excited to see Portrait L in all her glory, a wonderful painting that happens to be almost two millennia old. Described by in at the weekend as the 'Mona Lisa of the Middle East', this beauty was unearthed by archeologist William Flinders Petrie in 1888 and enjoyed a charmed life, being owned by some famous collectors, including Léonce Rosenberg, the earliest champion of the Cubists and Picasso, until at some point in the late 20th century its antiquity, provenance and importance was entirely forgotten. We've loved working on the story with our client , the innovative London gallery who are bringing her to the fair… an ancient masterpiece, lost and now found.

Try as it might, the weather was never going to dampen spirits at this weekend. In fact, we all agreed that this year was very much a vintage edition. As expected, – who we profiled in the latest issue of Magazine – was the star of the show, resplendent as ever. But, as the American discovered for herself, judging the festival’s Best Dressed Competition gets harder every year. Meanwhile, It was great to finally see the all-new electric in action, and indeed the Spitfires, Thunderbolts and Mustangs flying over the estate as part of the D-Day anniversary celebrations. But the highlight for us was seeing extraordinary numbers of people dressed to the nines, dancing in the rain – that’s what it’s all about.

In issue one of The Islander, the biannual magazine we produce for , we wrote about the design inspiration behind the lavish makeover of the resort, including the villa-style ‘casitas' that make The Retreat such a delightful, leafy haven at this much-loved Tenerife resort. That spectacular update is now complete – and we just had the pleasure of experiencing the new Canarian-inspired décor, the private pools and the stunning new Retreat Club Lounge overlooking the ocean firsthand. We’ll report back in issue two but really, there's nothing quite like seeing it for yourself.
