Running a group painting experience inside a 12th Century French Monastery on a luxury motorsport hospitality weekend. Who’d have thought?

The guests and I created a special piece celebrating 50 years since James Hunt clinched his 1976 world drivers championship with some nods to Le Mans in the background. The art, featuring James himself alongside his son Freddie was also helped along by adding his touch.

Going on my own Father - Son road trip to the race weekend myself, I wanted this art to be themed around a shared family passion for racing and also, and why not include some cool architecture with the venue we were staying at forming a nice backdrop.

I still have some things to do on this but I need some time to refresh my view - I’ve looked at it too long. I’m undecided on some of the text, but I always wanted to create a scenic cafe painting with a car thrown in, so this was a fun painting to make for the Ford GT40, one of my favourite cars in a Le Mans setting, and a chance to return to my favourite orange and blue colour scheme!

Here’s a closer look at the Las Vegas art I posted in my reel earlier. Looking back at it I get such a lot of satisfaction as it reminds me just how far I’ve come, from a kid who loved to make things but was never too happy with what he made, to an adult who has practiced and developed his skills, but also now appreciates a bit of imperfection.

To put a lot of effort into a piece and be happy with the result is my main goal. Also to have something I’d like to hang on my own wall, which the original actually is!
