I’ve been a bit quiet on here of late and art has fallen slightly off the radar for me due to work, life, energy levels but I just got back from a trip to Cornwall: somewhere I’ve not been since I was 18 that was well overdue a return to and I did it with some intention of clearing my head, deciding a little more on what I’d like to do creatively going forward and finding some inspiration.

Basically tho, the people in Cornwall are so bloody friendly I had a hard time getting a minute to myself 😂

I don’t know if there’s any future insight brewing in the background that will suddenly rise to the frontal cortex in the coming days but in the meantime, and because my Mondays are non-working days supposed to be dedicated to the upkeep of this page, here’s a picture of pub in Porthleven that I really liked!

This one’s for the locals. Today’s piece up for auction is an original pen and watercolour painting of The Nelson Inn on 12x16” watercolour board (unframed). One of my favourite pubs in the area and painted at a time when local pubs were closed due to lockdown and everybody was missing them.

So here goes. First item up for auction is this original Ayrton Senna watercolor and pen piece! 🏎️

It’s painted on rough-sized 25x30cm watercolor paper and will come unframed, but I’ll hand-sign it in the bottom right corner before sending. (For reference, it looks really nice styled in an 8x10” frame with a mount).

This weekend marks the last time F1 will race at Zandvoort, after five great years of the circuit being back on the calendar.

It hasn’t always been the ideal circuit for racing modern F1 cars, but I for one have loved its banked corners and its links with Max Verstappen and his orange army of fans.

Here’s my painting from 2021 - still one of my best sellers.

While I’m reposting a few of my old projects, here’s a dog portrait I painted back in 2022.

It’s probably still one of the best I’ve painted to date. It was quicker than some of my earlier attempts, the colours ended up almost exactly as I imagined them and I managed to get really close to the reference photo without over-painting all the hair and detail like I had in the past.

Compared to F1 art, where I’m designing and composing a poster from different reference photos, working out the typography and constantly thinking about it from a commercial perspective, a commission like this is quite different. The reference has already done a lot of the creative decision-making for you, so you can just concentrate on painting what you see.

I really like the simplicity and this one of George came out well.

Over the years, even though I became known for my F1 art and even sold it internationally, I started out painting a bunch of different subjects. At one point, I was usually happy to create something that pushed my skills on as an artist and maybe got someone to reach out and commission me to create something for them or for a gift for somebody.

House portraits were a joy to create, not only because my surrounding town has some lovely architecture but also because it connected me with people in my local community. These were all done in 2019/2020 and are something I really want to get back to

When my F1 art took off 5 years ago I was very lucky to have already worked a little bit with TrailMaps / Artwork for Riders . They had asked me to be a featured artist on their site if I could produce something that would be marketable to their audience. Being a mountain biker myself and having gone on a couple of night rides, this concept came to me and it was something I felt compelled to create

This was in 2020 when we were all very much locked down. It was digital and definitely my first attempt at a minimal colour poster and it was something I really enjoyed creating.

Little did I know that when my F1 art blew up a year later, the guys at trail maps who had already been shipping their work all over the place would be my main suppliers.

Aaron and Helen took all my initial orders, printed and packaged them up to send across the world. They shipped to New York, Australia, Brazil. It was crazy. They even helped me set up my online shops on Shopify and Etsy.

It just goes to show, you never know how business relationships are going to pan out when you take on that little job or do a small favour. Thank you so much both for all your hard work back in 2021 & 2022

To go alongside my post yesterday, one of the commissions I took on back in early 2021 was for a local cafe I visited quite a lot (just opposite The White Swan pub). I’d made some sales posters and done some graphic design work for them prior, so a poster was a natural next step.

It was another digital piece, and I was really happy with how I was able to simplify it. In the past, I’d often tended to try and recreate what I painted in a more photo-realistic style, whereas here I wanted to strip things back a bit.

The building itself is fairly ordinary, even though the owners had done a great job of making the cafe look great, and I think the finished piece ended up capturing that with a cheery, almost seaside feel to it.

Trying to deconstruct the subject a bit and have fun with it while still keeping the finished painting looking recognisable and punchy from a distance was the main goal. I limited my use of colours and kept the shapes simple, which was a bit of a departure from how I’d approached things before.
