Wishing you a merry festive season… however one chooses to mark it… as we close the year, and turn over the last page in our 2024 calendars.

It’s been a bit of a whirlwind few years, with one thing and another, but I’m slowly being able to find more time (and the mental energy) to create more time for art and drawing.

Having spent the last year exploring and reflecting upon the direction I’d like to take my art, and what feels most authentic to me… having in the past, leant towards creating (and churning out) work that I believed would be good to take to market and not necessarily true to my heart and my passions; knowing the importance of not just creating stuff I like but making it commercially viable and finding that balance, I think I’m now on the right track.

Also trying to resist the urge to speed up my process and work just to get things out there. Slowing down and creating more quality work and realising that it doesn’t matter if a project takes me weeks …or months… to complete. To get back to enjoying the creation and evolution of a piece.

I have a (sketchy) plan for next year and some ideas I’m excited about. But I’m removing the pressure to get it all out there as soon as I can and focusing more on a slower pace.

So I’ve not a lot to share in my ‘art v Artist’ post today but maybe next year will be a different story.

For the time being, I’m taking some time to relax and rest with loved ones as I close out the year. See you on the flip side 🤍

🎄 Excited to begin ‘s Twelve Days of Christmas, where I, alongside other artists, will be sharing art from Jehane’s Christmas Challenge prompts!

This is the first year I’ve taken part, so I’m really excited! I’m also looking forward to seeing what amazing art is created by other artists taking part!

Day 1 (1-2 Dec): Here’s my first post based on the theme ‘Joy to the World’ ❄️ Let me know what you think 🥰 This is a WORK IN PROGRESS! The shading and colour will be added soon.

My work is quite detailed, and takes a while to create, so I may be sharing a few WIPs as I go along… BUT… they will all be complete by the end of the month, and I’ll share them all with you.

Even though this is a WIP, it is still copyrighted to me, so please be mindful if sharing and please tag or credit me ☺️

🌟 New art 🌟
I’ve loved creating this piece and I think I’ll be taking most of my work in the direction of this style. I love vintage styles of art and I actually made this design for the front of my tattoo vouchers! I will also happily sell it as a stand-alone art print, too.
I usually create my art by hand, then scan at high res, but I made this piece digitally, taking a photo of my hand-drawn rough sketch of the composition, which I took into as a base layer to work on top of, adding the final pencil work shading and details. I then exported it to to add the colour and finally, Indesign to add the background colour block and text elements.
Although this looks like a small piece, it took most of an afternoon and a few hours in the evening to complete. I didn’t time the exact hours. I should maybe start doing that, as I think it’s important to share how long pieces take, and the work that goes into making art.
I’ve yet to add this new piece to my website and Etsy store, but it will be listed today.
Can be printed at any standard size, but this one is A7 size (within the border).
And yes, I am wearing a hat indoors! I’m about to pop out to collect some prints of mine from Attenborough Arts. I’ll share those with you shortly. Although they’re not finished - need a few more layers of the lino cut.
I digress… if you love this print, they will be available to buy from my Etsy shop after today 🌟
Much love, Debs 🤍

Have been trying out adding watercolour to my graphite drawings. Hard to capture fully on some areas but think I managed to get most of it on camera! What do you think? I probably need to draw on watercolour paper, as I usually only do my graphite drawing on super smooth Bristol board, which is not for watercolour! But I love the end result, so I might draw up some new stuff to try out. I’ve always kept my graphite and watercolour work separate. I don’t know why it suddenly dawned on me today to mix the two together, especially as I really love working in both mediums.

Missed a couple of weeks as have been away but good to be back to it! Had fun tonight experimenting with oil-based inks. I struggled getting a good balance between too little and too much ink but pretty pleased with how they turned out.

Finished! Purple and black plates added today. Feel like it looks like I’ve scribbled with a crayon now I look at it 😆 Room for improvement but onwards to the next project next week. Really enjoyed the process and pretty pleased with how it turned out.

I’ve only ever printed with one colour in Lino print, until today! Learnt about reduction and how to make a jig to register for multiple colours. Created this piece picking out the highlights, mid tones and darks. Managed to get two colour plates finished tonight. Adding more next week to finish it off - definitely a third, potentially a fourth colour plate. Used the hessian-backed Lino this week, as it works better with this process. Working up three machine pressed pieces and one hand pulled to see which turns out better.

Playing around with metallics on a very quick, mini thumbnail sketchbook painting. I’ve always found it hard to capture metallics on a photo/scan. Any tips… let me know! 🙌🏼
