Any system is only as good as its input. Without accurate, reliable, repeatable measurements, higher level functionality can't be built and won't be reliable.

At I.C.E. Electronics we are used to interfacing with the real world in its rawest electrical form and providing compensation to get the most out of your sensor.

Sensors often measure parameters from active parts of machines or plants. Size and weight permitting their ideal location is normally close to what they are monitoring or controlling. This normally comes with strict space requirements and an increase in the operational temperature requirements.

5 Key Factors in Engineering Design and Manufacture
DESIGN

Whether your project is a simple sensor amplifier, or a complex data logging system, there are certain risks you must consider when undertaking a new design. Your project structure and size need be taken into account. You need to identify what your requirements are and create well-defined specifications. And all aspects of your project need consideration from system to low-level functions. Another side-effect of the pandemic has meant that, more recently, component availability has become a high priority design consideration. On top of this, you have to understand the technical capabilities of your staff and internal resourcing. All of which can affect the delivery of your product.

SIMULATION

Do you know your Analogue signals? How is your power supply going to respond to transients? It’s important to understand signals from the real world in order for you to get the most accurate measurements out of your sensors, especially if your product is wireless. Simulation is a key tool in an engineer’s arsenal and a design-heavy approach can be paramount to successful delivery.

HARDWARE
Are you up to date with the latest component data? Do you have access to the right CAD tools? Hardware engineering design requires a clear understanding of circuit simulation, schematic design and capture, and PCB layouts. Getting the hardware right is the first step towards successful development.

FIRMWARE
Embedded processors often form the core of embedded systems. Their programming ultimately defines your product’s behaviour and performance. Design options surrounding the choice of device and its defined behaviour can have far reaching effects on your product, but also on the systems it interacts with. Clear, concise documentation and robust design are crucial to delivering a working product to your required specifications.

SOFTWARE
Do you have knowledge of how to tailor your software to suit your needs? Will you be able to accurately display and analyse your data? If not managed properly, your hardware and software design can become like a chicken and egg situation. You need to understand your hardware and firmware to understand your software… to understand your hardware to understand your software. Sound design specifications and communication protocol definitions remove any disconnect between software and hardware.

TURBINE BLADE DEFECTION

Here at I.C.E. Electronics, we have developed a unique wireless telemetry system capable of offering precise, high-bandwidth wireless capability without the cost of high-power consumption.

Our remote transmitters are highly integrated and offer interfaces for strain gauges, thermocouples or PRT devices.

Supervision and control is performed in the digital domain, the sensor signals are transmitted via their own dedicated radio link. The system can be monitored remotely and controlled via a RS-485 or USB link. Multiple systems can be connected together to provide a suite of measurements.

I.C.E. Electronic’s high fidelity wireless analogue technology has been successfully deployed to measure turbine blade deflection during test and from moving parts within an engine.

SPEED & VIBRATION CONDITIONING

At I.C.E. Electronics we offer unique access to data from rotating and reciprocating parts through our innovative inductive wireless and/or high fidelity wireless analogue technologies. We have a number of proven solutions that can be tailored to taking measurements from your part.

Tooth-wheel and target-based detection is a fundamental measurement for almost every rotating machine. This measurement is made with a wide variety of sensors from Variable Reluctance (VR) to lasers.

In test environments these signals may need to travel long distances, or be shared between multiple pieces of equipment and cross-isolated ground planes. When it comes to machines, reliability, space and operating environment become important factors to consider.

Data may be used as a simple speed indicator, or used for complex vibration analysis. In both cases the end use could relate to critical control signals or condition based monitoring.

At I.C.E. Electronics we have created systems for both ends of the spectrum and have a selection of standard speed conditioning products.

I.C.E. ELECTRONICS ONLINE SHAFT MONITORING
Our inductive wireless system is perfectly suited for long term, uninterrupted measurement from rotating shafts.

The system has successfully been deployed onto drive shafts, CAM shafts, steering columns and motorcycle sprockets.

In these cases a load cell(s) is interfaced directly with the remote transmitter. The transmitter is powered wirelessly and transmits data over a closely coupled wireless link.

The transmitter’s small size means it is easily embedded on the shaft. The receiver unit communicates with the transmitter via a coaxial cable and set of antennas. This means the system can be successfully fitted into hard to reach areas, allowing the receiver to be situated away from the shaft area.

The inductive wireless system can be tailored to many sensing technologies. I.C.E. Electronics has deployed the system into applications to measure load, strain, temperature and pressure.
