Georgina Westley Graphic Design and Illustration Artist, graphic designer, illustrator. Drawing places and things close to your heart. Sells prints online via www.georginawestley.co.uk or on Etsy.

Hello I’m Georgina, I’m a graphic designer and illustrator. I work from home in my conservatory. The light in there is fantastic. It can get a little hot in the summer and requires a few extra layers in the winter but I shouldn’t grumble. I have a lovely view of my hawthorn tree and ideas often strike when I’m day dreaming or watching the birds fight over the peanuts. I have a degree in Media and

Communications from Wolverhampton University and I completed a Foundation Course in Graphic Design at Bedford College. I was an in-house graphic designer for the RSPB for many years and I continue to work closely with them now as a freelance designer. In addition to corporate graphic design I also sell my illustrations as prints. I have two seemingly contrasting styles, but both started from me simply creating things that I liked, things I wanted on my wall at home. Over time other people have seen them, liked them, bought them and things have gone on from there. I am married and have two beautiful children. Family time is the best. I rely on yoga to keep me grounded and balanced. I volunteer weekly at my local hospice which is a huge privilege and offers me a chance to be part of the wider community. I love chocolate cake, spaghetti bolognese, Nashville and I drink tea by the bucket load. And red shoes…I love red shoes.

170 sky images and counting…

Last week I asked my email subscribers (and followers here) to send me their favourite sunset, cloudscape, dramatic skies photos. And what a response. I’m so so pleased. 🙏 Thank you.

I now have a bank of stunning reference images on my Google drive, from as far away as Western Australia and as close as my next door neighbour who shares the same big sky view as me.

Today I sat down to paint, and chose this image at random. It just happened to be sent from my mum, so I was able to ask her where it was taken. Can you guess?

Today I asked my newsletter subscribers for help with my current painting collection ‘Borrowed Hope’.

I asked them to send me any inspiring sunset, cloudscape, dramatic sky photos that they’ve taken.

And oh my, they’ve come good for me! Thank you. I can’t believe how many beautiful photos I’ve been sent. They will keep me busy for months! I’m so chuffed.

The grid photos are my own reference pics, mostly taken from outside my house where I am lucky enough to have big skies. These May/June months are perfect for cloud spotting and super sunsets.

If you’ve got a favourite sunset/cloudscape/dramatic skies photo that you’re happy to share with me then please do send it to me in a message. The more the merrier. And thanks to everyone who has already sent me some. I’m genuinely thrilled. I’m also really happy that so many people stop to capture the skies that inspire them. Keep looking up folks. 🙏

Thanks for all the ‘Gamvar’ tips. Glad I made the switch to this varnish. I’m really pleased with how these two sunset paintings have turned out. A light gloss sheen, catches the light beautifully, quick drying, no brush marks. I’m a convert.

I’m trying a new varnish. Any other artists used Gamvar? If so what do you think of it?

I’ve had a few problems with the Windsor & Newton one not curing properly so I’m looking to switch.

Hoping this new one is good. Tips appreciated 🙏❤️🎨

I bought four of these canvases and they are a real joy to paint on.

This is painting number two (on the right) completed today. It’s based on a photo of a sunrise I took last week. It’s ended up looking nothing like the photo though because I can’t be trusted to not use all the colours!

If anyone has name suggestions for either of these I’d be most grateful. 🙏

The moment just before it all changes.

Every colour you could imagine, all at once, fighting for the same few minutes of light. And you were there. 🙏

Within minutes, twilight will merge, blend and flatten the sky before you.

But until then, this.

I wanted to practice my portraiture today and so I spent a few happy hours in the gardenI trying out my Unison pastels. I only have the Landscape 16 half stick set, but I wanted to see if I could still get interesting colour combinations in a portrait. I found the lack of mid-tones a bit limiting and not having any pinky/reds was bit of a challenge but it was good fun trying. If you’ve used the Unison Portrait soft pastels set I would love to know what you think of them and see what you’ve created with them.
