Otl Aicher (1922–1991) believed good design had to do more than look appealing. It had to serve a purpose.

One of Germany’s most influential graphic designers, Aicher is best known for creating the visual identity of the 1972 Munich Olympics. His pictograms and carefully organised graphic system made information clear and easy to understand, regardless of language.

This is what makes his approach so relevant today. A logo can look impressive, but if it fails to communicate, it isn’t doing its job. Every shape, line and decision should have a reason behind it.

For Aicher, design wasn’t about adding decoration. It was about finding the clearest, most effective way to solve a problem.

The real test of a design isn’t how it looks, but how well it works.

What makes a logo truly successful: how it looks or how it works?

Before the printing press, if someone had a boring opinion, they had to tell people individually.

Then someone invented a machine that could annoy thousands of people at once.

It was considered a huge step forward for civilisation.

And several centuries later, we invented Facebook, so we could do it without even buying a printing press. 😂
