A small piece of back-catalogue housekeeping before the year closes.

ACX says its legacy royalty model ends on 31 December 2026. For titles published before 26 May 2026, legacy rates continue only until year-end unless the title is enrolled in the new model. ACX’s new rates are 50% for exclusive titles and 30% for non-exclusive titles, up from 40% and 25% respectively.

The new model also calculates royalties on membership listening using Member Value, apportioned across the titles a member engages with and weighted by list price. Listener engagement and completion therefore play a more significant role.

Before December ends, take a few minutes to:
• Log in to ACX and check each pre-26 May title’s royalty model.
• Enrol titles that need to move to the new model.
• Speak with any narrator or producer on a royalty share agreement; their approval is needed before those titles can migrate.

A practical check now can help keep your audiobook catalogue in distribution in January.

Your AI-narrated audiobook could be someone’s first encounter with AI narration. Make it a good one.

Edison Research’s 2026 survey found that 58% of Americans, about 157 million people, have listened to an audiobook. Yet just 16% of US audiobook listeners have ever experienced AI-voiced content. The audience is already vast, and for many, this format is still new.

A practical first step: choose a premium, lifelike voice, then proof-listen to your opening chapter before publishing. Pay attention to pacing, pronunciation and how the narration carries your story. Those first few minutes set the tone for the whole listening experience.

Would your readers give a digitally narrated audiobook a try? A new NielsenIQ study commissioned by Audible, presented at Frankfurt Book Fair, suggests many would: half of listeners surveyed across 11 countries are open to it. Openness ranged from 42% in Germany to 66% in Japan, with fiction leading in most markets, though Germany and Japan showed stronger interest in non-fiction.

That’s receptiveness, not a guaranteed sale. What matters is the listening experience, not the production label. Try a sample chapter on headphones and speakers. Listen for clear pronunciations, dialogue that feels natural, and a delivery suited to your genre. Audio can also complement print: some listeners go on to read the book in print or ebook after listening.

With Lama Mani, you can test a sample with rapid processing, assign distinct voices to characters, and scale word-based costs to your project and chosen voice quality, without a studio. And for a memoir or theatrical literary fiction, a human narrator may still be the right creative choice.

Your next audiobook listener may already be opening Spotify every day.

Spotify plans to expand its audiobook service to more than 180 markets by the end of 2026, with a catalogue of 350,000+ titles in over 120 languages. Familiar listening habits could make trying a book feel easier, but wider availability is an opportunity, not a promise of instant sales. Access and pricing will vary by market.

For authors, the practical work still matters: check your distribution terms, royalties, territories and digital-narration rules. Make sure your metadata is accurate, your cover reads clearly at thumbnail size, and your finished audio is polished. Global reach amplifies the listening experience you create; it can’t replace it.

Lama Mani helps you turn written work into professional-quality audio without a studio, with a choice of Digital Narrator, rapid processing and word-based billing. We’re not a distribution service and don’t place audiobooks on Spotify. We help you prepare audio for the distribution route you choose.

A story’s cast is visible on the page. In audio, listeners have to find their way by ear.

Audible’s October feature launch puts that challenge in focus: a character guide identifies who is speaking in real time, with spoiler-free character cards and new interactive and visual discovery features. The message for indie authors is clear: helping listeners stay oriented is part of the listening experience.

Before recording, make a simple character sheet for every significant role: who they are, how their voice is distinct, and how to pronounce their name. Keep those choices consistent, so listeners can follow the story without pausing to work out who has entered the scene.

A small preparation step can make a complex cast feel effortless to hear.

A character your listeners have followed for five books shouldn’t sound like a different person every time they press play.

When instalments are produced months or years apart, voices and pronunciations can drift. A simple series audio bible helps keep the details close at hand: each character’s Digital Narrator voice, tone, pace, accent and pronunciation notes. Save reference clips, keep a baseline for the narrative voice, and add new characters as they arrive. Test tricky invented names in context, and if a chapter drifts, regenerate that section rather than the whole book.

With Lama Mani, assign distinct voices to specific characters and reuse those choices across instalments. Professional-quality Digital Narrator output, rapid processing and word-based billing that scales with text length and voice quality make revisions easier. And a no-studio workflow means no rebooking a human cast for every book in the run.

Consistency doesn’t freeze a performance; it gives listeners a familiar foundation as characters grow.

A design book is never only what is printed on the page.

Its meaning lives in the relationship between image, plan, diagram, material, scale and space. A straight reading can describe the text while leaving the work’s deeper atmosphere unheard.

A companion audio edition offers another way in. Build it from the prose, catalogue essays and designer interviews, then write descriptions for the ear rather than simply reading captions. Let the interview provide the spine. Give careful attention to studio names, materials and non-English terms, so every detail arrives with precision.

Museums and galleries have narrated exhibitions for years. Designers, increasingly, are becoming storytellers in their own right. It is a compelling blueprint for independent designers and design writers: publish the audio as a companion edition, not an afterthought.

With Lama Mani, choose a narrator whose register matches the material: measured for essays, warm for interviews. Direct the casting yourself, process chapter by chapter in minutes, and create the entire edition without a studio. Word-based billing makes sense whether you are producing a 4,000-word catalogue essay or a complete monograph.

Audio can be more than a new format. It can be a reader’s first encounter with your work, and a route to what they read next.

At Frankfurter Buchmesse 2026, Audible and NielsenIQ presented findings from a survey of 18,000 consumers across 11 markets. Among listeners who discovered an author through audio, 63% went on to buy another work by that author. And 69% had already read the title they listened to: a reminder that audio and print often sit side by side in a reader’s life.

A practical tip for indie authors: treat each audiobook as a doorway to your wider catalogue. Keep series details and author links easy to find, and guide listeners towards the next title. The survey also found that 34% listened to more audiobooks over the past year.

Nobody hears your audiobook the way you auditioned it.

You may listen in a quiet room with good headphones. Your audience might be making breakfast, driving on the motorway, or riding a noisy train with inexpensive earbuds. A professional audiobook has to make that journey.

Before you approve the final audio, try this:
• Put clarity first. Dialogue, names and numbers should land on the first listen, even at low volume.
• Check levels across the whole book. Intimate passages shouldn’t disappear; louder moments shouldn’t send listeners reaching for the dial.
• Do one full proof-listen on a small speaker or in the car, not just studio headphones.
• Give chapter openings and endings extra attention, and note any issues with timestamps as you go.
• Keep emotional passages controlled so the feeling comes through without the words fading away.

With Lama Mani, natural-sounding narration and chapter-by-chapter processing make it easier to review a passage and refine the listening experience, without a recording booth.

You may not have written a book. You may already have the material for an audiobook.

Newsletters, blog essays, standalone guides, workbooks, serialised posts and guest articles can become one collection, or several focused volumes.

Start with your archive: choose 8–12 pieces that still stand alone. Group them by idea, not date, so each volume has a clear point of view.

Give every piece a brief spoken re-entry for listeners who can’t skim a contents page. Read the title and volume framing aloud, too.

Think “host,” not theatrical narrator. Choose a warm, conversational voice and keep it consistent across the collection. Clarity matters; listeners may return to an essay or guide more than once.

With Lama Mani, choose professional-quality lifelike narration, process chapter by chapter in minutes and create audio without a studio or recording booth. Word-based billing makes shorter pieces viable, even a focused 6,000-word guide can stand alone.
