Think about:

It might be having people who actually know what to do with it.

Businesses now have access to extraordinarily capable AI tools.

But access doesn't equal results.

That point was highlighted this month when Anthropic announced a $100 million commitment to train 10,000 engineers by the end of 2027, aimed at helping address the enterprise AI talent gap.

Anthropic's Steve Corfield made an interesting point:

“A small team of high-agency people with the right skills, access to Claude, and a deep understanding of how their business runs can transform an entire company.”

And there’s a lesson here for SMEs.

You probably don't need everyone in the company to become an AI expert.

But you do need people who understand your business well enough to spot where AI can genuinely help.

Where do you lose time?

Which processes frustrate customers?

“Better the devil you know…” Really?

It’s a phrase we hear surprisingly often when businesses talk about their IT provider.

You know the support is slow.

You know communication could be better.

You know problems keep coming back.

But changing feels like hassle, so you carry on.

The problem is that familiarity and good service aren't the same thing.

Still using Microsoft Publisher?

This one could easily catch businesses out.

Microsoft Publisher reached end of life in Microsoft 365 on 1 October 2026. Microsoft advised businesses to convert existing Publisher files into alternative formats before retirement.

It sounds like a small technology change.

Until someone desperately needs the company brochure, certificate, label, leaflet or template that's sitting in an old .pub file.

It's a good reminder that technology planning isn't only about the newest tools.

Sometimes it's about making sure the old ones don't quietly become a business problem.

I think business leaders need to give themselves permission to slow down when it comes to AI.

There’s a lot of pressure to “do something with AI”.

But for SMEs, I think the better question is:

Where are we wasting people’s time?

Take a typical 50-person business.

The finance team might spend hours each month pulling information from different spreadsheets and systems to create management reports.

The opportunity isn’t necessarily to buy the latest AI platform.

It might be to use AI and automation to help bring that information together, identify trends and reduce the manual work, giving the team more time to actually understand what the numbers are telling them.

That’s where AI gets interesting.

Not because it replaces people, but because it can remove some of the repetitive work that stops good people doing more valuable things.

And importantly, not every problem needs AI. Sometimes a simple automation or better process is the answer.

For me, good technology decisions start with the business problem, not the technology.

The SMEs that get the greatest value from AI won’t necessarily use the most of it. They’ll understand where it genuinely belongs.

🛡️ Cyber security isn’t just about preventing an attack. It’s about being ready to respond and recover.

Recent guidance from the National Cyber Security Centre highlights the importance of organisations being prepared before an incident happens. It recommends establishing and regularly exercising arrangements for responding to and recovering from cyber attacks.

The National Cyber Security Centre also recommends Cyber Essentials as a first step where its more comprehensive Cyber Assessment Framework isn’t appropriate, describing it as the minimum cyber security standard recommended by the Government for organisations of all sizes.
