FIFO (First In, First Out) gets treated like a shelf-stacking habit, but it's actually an accounting choice — selling your oldest stock first changes how that stock is valued on paper, which feeds into your margins and your VAT position.

Worth knowing it's a deliberate method, not just what happens naturally when you rotate stock.

Nobody sat down and designed their inventory system around a spreadsheet. It just... happened. One formula at a time, until VLOOKUP was quietly doing the job of a full-time inventory analyst, with none of the training and all of the pressure.

It didn't ask to track 200 SKUs across two warehouses. It didn't ask to survive fourteen versions of "FINAL_v3_actually_final.xlsx." And it definitely didn't ask what happens when someone deletes column F.

When "how we track stock" only really lives in one person's head — which spreadsheet tab means what, which shorthand means reorder now — the whole operation is one sick day away from confusion.

It's not a training problem. It's a sign the system was never actually built to be understood by anyone else.

Selling online and in-store off the same stock number eventually catches up with you — sell the last unit in both places within the same hour, and someone's getting a cancelled order or an awkward phone call.

It's not really an "IT problem," it's just what happens without real-time reconciliation across channels. Just a matter of time until it does.

If Canada's part of your supply chain, worth knowing: CPTPP officially entered into force between the UK and Canada on 1 September. It brings some genuinely SME-friendly provisions for customs facilitation and e-commerce — but origin rules, commodity codes, and customs procedures still need to be handled correctly to actually benefit from it.

Worth a quick check if this affects you.

For anyone new here — what Forsupliance actually does, in one line: forecasts that show their reasoning instead of just a number, purchase orders drafted automatically and ready for your approval, and UK VAT/post-Brexit compliance built into every stock movement instead of a quarter-end scramble.

Built for UK retailers, wholesalers, and e-commerce sellers still running this on spreadsheets.

If you sell on Amazon.co.uk via FBM, three dates are worth having on your radar — all straight from Amazon's own seller update:

1 September — Automated Handling Time can activate if your listed time stays slower than your real dispatch performance for a month.

30 September — Business Hour Delivery Rate needs to stay above 90% for Amazon Business orders.

30 October — listings that aren't compliant risk deactivation for Amazon Business customers.

Worth a quick check of your Account Health dashboard this week.

Safety stock — the buffer you hold to cover a late delivery or a sudden demand spike — is one of those numbers most SMEs set once when they start out and never look at it again.

Set it too low, and one delayed supplier order turns into a stockout. Set it too high, and you're quietly tying up cash in stock that just sits there. Worth recalculating a couple of times a year as your sales patterns shift, not just once at setup.

Compliance readiness isn't just about whether the paperwork exists — it's whether you could actually put your hand on the right number in ten seconds, not ten minutes of digging.

Most SMEs are closer to "trusted" than they think: the gap between guessing and audit-ready usually isn't a mountain of new work, it's just getting stock movements logged, dated, and reasoned in one place instead of scattered across memory and spreadsheets.

Thought it was time to actually show what's behind all these posts — this is the real Forsupliance workspace, sample data, exactly as it looks day to day.

Swipe through and you'll see: what the whole system covers at a glance, the live numbers on the dashboard, a reorder queue that flags stock risk before it becomes a problem, the actual forecast (and reasoning) behind one product, and how the model learns from your decisions instead of just repeating the same suggestion.

If any of this looks like something your shop could use, the demo's free and takes two minutes: forsupliance.co.uk/demo
