UK Businesses Unprepared for PSTN Switch-Off: Only 18% Have Post-PSTN Solutions Ready
Research from Zen Internet highlights a worrying lack of preparedness among UK businesses for the upcoming Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) switch-off.
The study reveals that just 18% of small businesses and 26% of large businesses have implemented a post-PSTN solution. Across enterprises and SMEs, 27% are currently exploring options, while 17% have yet to determine their next steps. Meanwhile, 19% of businesses are in the process of migrating to new systems.
Alarmingly, nearly 1 in 10 businesses (9%) remain unaware of the impending switch-off entirely.
Why the PSTN Switch-Off Matters
The PSTN, an analogue system using copper wiring commonly referred to as the landline, has long underpinned communication systems. However, the transition to an all-IP (digital) network represents a significant technological shift. Businesses that rely on PSTN could face severe disruptions if they fail to adapt.
The switch-off, scheduled for January 2027, comes with an added urgency: after December 2025, businesses may receive just 90 days’ notice to transition to an all-IP system or risk losing essential communication and operational tools.
The Risks of Waiting
David Barber, Strategy Director at Zen Internet, warns of the dangers of delay:
“While our research shows good awareness that the switch-off is happening, there’s a clear disconnect between knowing about the end of PSTN and having a future-proof solution in place. Too many businesses may be leaving decisions around all-IP communications to the last minute, which could be a recipe for disruption.”
The PSTN network is already showing its age, with increased downtime and maintenance challenges. Businesses that fail to transition in time risk losing connectivity, phone numbers, and access to critical systems like security, payment processing, and IoT devices. A rushed migration could lead to poor decisions and unsuitable solutions.
How to Prepare for All-IP
Barber advises businesses to take proactive steps:
Assess your needs: Conduct an audit of all systems relying on the PSTN.
Explore local options: Check what all-IP solutions are available in your area.
Consult experts: Work with technology partners to find a solution tailored to your needs.
At Zen Internet, Barber notes, “We’re always happy to run through what PSTN means for our customers.”
Beyond Risk: The Opportunity
Switching to all-IP isn’t just about avoiding disruption—it’s an opportunity. Early adopters can unlock enhanced communication features, greater flexibility, and a competitive edge by embracing digital technology sooner.
Barber concludes, “Making the switch ahead of the deadline not only mitigates risks but positions businesses to unlock the full potential of all-IP services. With the right preparation, this shift can be a growth opportunity rather than a challenge.”
For businesses, the message is clear: start planning now to ensure a smooth transition and capitalize on the advantages of all-IP technology.
