Macs have a reputation for being safe. But that doesn’t mean they’re untouchable.

In our latest test, we launched 11 targeted attacks against macOS, starting with spear-phishing emails and then using techniques commonly seen in real-world attacks.

Our testers gathered system information, stole files, spied on network activity, destroyed and encrypted data, and attempted to cover their tracks.

The results were stark.

âś… Bitdefender, ESET, Norton 360 and TotalAV Premium stopped all 11 attacks.

❌ Built-in macOS protection and Canimaan Software’s ClamXAV stopped none.

The test shows why relying on the assumption that Macs are inherently safe can leave users exposed — and why effective anti-malware protection still matters.

Every quarter we test a range of home anti-malware products.
Our advanced cyber security testing is designed to evaluate how products perform against the most common threats you encounter every day, while also assessing their ability to detect and respond to more focused attacks that aim to evade standard defences.

For most, both types of defence matter. A failure to stop general threats leads to constant noise and disruption, while a failure against targeted attacks can result in serious compromise. By including a balanced mix of threat types, the test provides insight into how well each product copes across the spectrum of real-world risk.

A lot of us rely on our phones and laptops every day, but very few of us actually know what to do if we suddenly lose access to them.

It’s worth practising before it ever happens. Most phones, laptops, and online accounts have recovery tools built in, but trying to figure them out when you’re stressed and locked out is the worst time to learn.

Take a few minutes to check things like device recovery options, password reset methods, backup settings, and “find my device” tools. A little preparation now can make a bad day much easier to deal with later.
