A new employee’s first day should be about meeting the team, learning the role and getting started — not waiting around for a laptop to be configured.

One of our clients recently had a new team member joining and needed a new laptop prepared. They purchased the device, and we took care of the rest.

We built the laptop using our trusted hardened security configuration, installed the required business software, applied the latest updates and checked that everything was working correctly.

We also provided a detailed multi-page handover document showing exactly what had been completed. This gives the client a clear record of the device setup, security measures and important information they may need in the future.

The best part? The laptop was fully prepared five days before the employee’s start date.

That meant there was no last-minute rush, no delays and no new employee sitting at a desk unable to work. On day one, the laptop could simply be handed over, allowing the team to focus on welcoming and training their new colleague.

Good IT preparation is not just about setting up a computer. It is about removing disruption, reducing risk and helping your business run smoothly.

If you have new employees joining, plan their technology in advance. A properly prepared device can make a big difference to their first impression of your business.

🚨 Free Cyber Security Awareness Training for Small Businesses

If your business has 20 employees or fewer, I’m offering free online cyber security awareness training.

Why? Because most cyber problems do not start with complicated hacking. They start with an email, a link, a fake message, or a simple mistake made on a busy day.

This training helps your team:
• spot suspicious emails and links
• avoid common scams
• understand what to look out for
• feel more confident about staying safe at work

At the end of the session, employees will complete a simple multiple-choice test. Anyone who passes will receive a downloadable certificate of completion.

The aim is simple: help small businesses reduce risk, avoid costly mistakes, and make it harder for criminals to catch people out.

If your business has 20 employees or fewer and you would like a free session, send me a DM.

No jargon. No pressure. Just something genuinely useful for small businesses.

Microsoft 365 holds a lot of important business information, including email, files, Teams messages and calendars. That makes it useful, but also something that needs proper protection.

Here are 10 simple security checks worth reviewing:

1. Set up proper access rules
2. Turn on multi-factor authentication
3. Review your Microsoft Secure Score
4. Protect against phishing emails
5. Secure OneDrive and SharePoint sharing
6. Manage laptops, phones and tablets
7. Label sensitive business data
8. Review who has access to what
9. Monitor unusual account activity
10. Have backup and recovery in place

The key point is simple: Microsoft 365 should not be left on default settings and forgotten about.

A few small improvements can reduce risk, protect your data and help prevent bigger problems later.

Your firewall is one of the key protections between your business and the outside world.

But it should not be treated as a “set it and forget it” device. It needs regular checks, updates and maintenance to keep doing its job properly.

Here are 10 firewall best practices every business should think about:

1. Back up the configuration
2. Review old rules and unused access
3. Keep firmware updated
4. Keep related software updated
5. Use advanced protection where available
6. Use strong authentication
7. Limit access to trusted people only
8. Monitor and review logs
9. Separate important parts of your network
10. Test how you would recover if something went wrong

A well-managed firewall helps protect your data, systems and business reputation.

Small checks today can prevent big problems tomorrow.

Keeping your Windows machines secure does not have to be complicated.

Here are 10 simple best practices every business should consider:

1. Keep Windows updated
2.Use built-in security protection
3. Use strong, unique passwords
4. Protect devices with BitLocker encryption
5.Remove old or unneeded services
6. Back up important data
7. Remove unused apps and keep machines tidy
8. Run regular vulnerability scans
9. Avoid using admin rights for daily work
10. Know what is installed on each machine

That last point is important. If you do not know what is installed across your machines, how can you make sure it is protected — or that it should even be there?

Small actions can prevent big problems.

Small upgrade, big difference.

This Dell Micro PC came in for a quick refresh. I added an extra 8GB RAM, taking it from 8GB to 16GB, and replaced the Wi-Fi aerial as the original one had been lost.

It is a good reminder that not every IT issue needs a full replacement. Sometimes a simple upgrade or repair can extend the life of your equipment and keep your business running smoothly.

Better performance. Restored Wi-Fi. Less waste.

Client job completed.

A client was retiring an old computer system and wanted one thing made clear:

Could any data still be recovered from the SSD drives?

That is a very sensible question.

When a business gets rid of old computers, laptops, servers or storage drives, the risk does not end when the system is switched off.

Those drives may still hold client records, financial information, emails, login details, business documents and other sensitive data.

Deleting files or doing a quick format is not always enough.

The client asked us to make sure the data could not be retrieved from the used SSD drives before the equipment was fully retired.

That gave them peace of mind.

It reduced the risk of sensitive information falling into the wrong hands.

It also helped protect their clients, their reputation and their business.

This is the kind of job that often gets overlooked.

But it matters.

Old equipment can still carry business risk.

Before you sell, recycle, donate or dispose of old computer systems, it is worth making sure the data has been dealt with properly.

A clean office clear-out should not create a data breach later.

Email security does not need to be complicated.

Most email attacks work because someone is busy, distracted, or unsure what to look for. A few simple habits can make a big difference.

Here are 𝟳 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 should follow:

𝟭. 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿
Look closely at the email address, not just the name. Scammers often use addresses that look almost right.

𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗸
Unexpected links and attachments should always be treated with caution.

𝟯. 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗿𝘆𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Sensitive information should be protected, especially when it is being sent or stored.

𝟰. 𝗘𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
MFA adds an extra layer of protection if a password is stolen.

𝟱. 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀
If something feels wrong, report it. Quick reporting can help protect the whole business.

𝟲. 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀
Avoid simple passwords and never reuse the same password across multiple accounts.

𝟳. 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲
Email protection tools work best when they are kept current.

Cyber criminals rely on small mistakes. Good habits reduce the risk.

Here’s a simpler version:

Small upgrade today.

I upgraded the memory in my Dell OptiPlex Micro from 8GB to 16GB RAM.

I use this little PC for testing and cyber security work.

It was starting to feel a bit slow, so this should help it run smoother.

Not every improvement has to be big or expensive.

Sometimes a simple upgrade keeps a good machine useful for longer.
