A website can’t fix a bad offer.

It can make your business look sharper, explain what you do properly and make it much easier for someone to take the next step.

But it can’t do all the work on its own.

If the service isn’t clear, the pricing makes no sense or there’s no real reason for somebody to choose you, throwing a new design at it won’t magically solve everything.

That’s why some of the most useful conversations I have with clients happen before I’ve designed anything.

We end up talking about which services actually matter, what customers normally ask, where enquiries currently come from and what we want somebody to do when they land on the site.

Those answers shape the website far more than picking a nice font ever will. A new Squarespace website can be a really good opportunity to tidy up how you present the business as a whole, not just how it looks online.

And that’s when the end result tends to be much stronger.

Your homepage doesn’t need to tell them everything.

One of the easiest ways to make a website feel overwhelming is trying to squeeze the entire business onto the homepage.

Every service. Every bit of history. Every testimonial. Every qualification. Every possible question somebody might have.

Before long, the homepage is absolutely massive, and the important stuff gets buried.

I’d much rather use it as a starting point.

Tell people who you are, what you do and why they should choose you. Show them the key services and a bit of proof that you’re good at what you do, then give them somewhere obvious to go next.

That might be viewing your work, reading more about a service, or simply getting in touch.

The rest of the website can do the heavy lifting.

Your homepage just needs to make people want to keep looking.

If yours has turned into a bit of an information dump over the years, it might be time for a tidy-up.

And that's where I can come in. Get in touch today.

Your website shouldn’t need constant babysitting.

One of the reasons I specialise in Squarespace is because I don’t want clients to feel like they need to call a web designer every time they want to change a photo, update some wording or add something new.

Once your website is built, it should actually feel like yours.

That means being able to log in, understand what you’re looking at and make the everyday changes yourself without worrying that one wrong click is going to bring the whole thing crashing down.

And if you’d rather not touch it at all? That’s fine too. I offer ongoing maintenance for exactly that reason.

But you should have the choice.

A good website isn’t just about how it looks on launch day. It should be easy to manage long after I’ve handed it over.

Your website has a job to do.

It’s easy to get caught up in making a website look good.

The right colours. Nice photography. Clean fonts. A layout that feels modern.

All of that matters, but I’m much more interested in what happens after somebody lands on it.

Can they immediately tell what you do?

Can they find the service they’re looking for without digging through five different pages?

Is there an obvious next step when they’re ready to enquire?

And, probably most importantly, does the whole thing give them confidence that you’re the right business to speak to?

A good-looking website is great.

A good-looking website that actually helps turn visitors into enquiries is much better.

That’s the difference I’m looking for whenever I build or improve a website for a client.

If your website looks the part but isn’t really doing much for the business behind it, there might be a few things worth changing.

I don’t believe in building websites behind closed doors.

One thing I’ll never do is disappear for a few weeks, build your entire website behind closed doors and then suddenly send you a finished site, hoping you like it.

Once I’ve got the initial design in place, I like to get clients involved.

You’ll get a password-protected link so you can have a proper look around while I’m still building. See how the pages feel, read through the wording, check the images and tell me if something isn’t quite how you pictured it.

It makes the whole process MUCH easier.

Small changes can be made as we go, rather than getting to the end of the project with a massive list of things that need changing.

I might know my way around Squarespace, but you know your business better than anyone.

The best websites normally come from combining the two.

You shouldn't see your website for the first time when it's finished.

When I'm building a Squarespace website, I like to keep my clients involved throughout the process.

Once I've got the initial design in place, I'll share a password-protected link so you can see how everything is taking shape while I'm still working on it.

Have a click around, see how it feels and let me know if there's anything you'd like changing. It could be the wording, an image, the layout of a section or something I've interpreted differently to how you pictured it.

I'd much rather make those little changes as we go than save everything for one massive round of amends at the end.

I might be the one building it, but it's still your website. You should be involved in getting it right.

Keeping on top of things throughout the build means there are a lot fewer balls flying around when we get to the final hurdle.

by Stoneman is officially a 2026 finalist for Best Website Design Business at the The UK Small Business Awards!

Considering I started by Stoneman simply because I enjoyed building Squarespace websites and thought I could offer local businesses something better, seeing the name on an award certificate still feels slightly surreal.

Over the last couple of years I've had the chance to work with some brilliant businesses, build a portfolio I'm genuinely proud of, and turn what started as a side project into a proper business of my own.

There's still plenty I want to do with by Stoneman, but this feels like a pretty decent moment to stop and appreciate how far it's come.

A massive thank you to every client who's trusted me with their business, recommended me to someone else, shared my work or supported me along the way.

Plenty happening behind the scenes at by Stoneman at the minute.

A few Squarespace websites recently wrapped up, a few more currently taking shape, and some new projects lined up that I'm looking forward to getting stuck into.

One of my favourite parts of this job is how different every project ends up being.

One week I'm working on a website for an events business, the next it's language training, dance classes, trades or something completely different.

Different businesses, different audiences and different goals, so the website shouldn't just be the same template with a new logo dropped on top.

I'll be sharing a few of the projects I've been working on over the coming weeks, along with some older favourites from the portfolio too.

A website never starts looking like the finished product.

Every Squarespace project starts with a blank page.

Then comes:

◾the planning.
◾the structure.
◾the copy.
◾the colours.
◾the images.

The little details that most people never notice, but all add up to creating a website that's easy to use.

It's one of my favourite parts of the job, watching everything slowly come together until launch day.

No two businesses are the same, so no two websites should be either.
