Since this whole post could read as anti-AI: I wrote this post as someone who uses AI every day.
For me, Claude writes the boring, repetitive code so I’m not doing it by hand. It catches a missing bracket faster than I would. Sometimes, it’ll give me a rough first draft of a post to argue with, and sometimes it’ll spit out some complete nonsense which simultaneously shows me what I actually wanted to say.
As an assistant, it’s very good and i’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t miss it if it was no longer here.
What I never give it is the deciding.
The shape of a site. What a particular customer needs to see, and in what order. What to leave out. Which gut call to back when the data isn’t there.
That’s my IP, and it’s the part I wouldn’t outsource to anyone, software or not. AI can tell me what’s been done a hundred times before. It can’t tell me what’s right for one business it’s never met, run by a founder it’s never spoken to.
I don’t expect that to change, either. The tools will keep getting better at the doing. The deciding stays a human’s job, and this post explains why that’s always worth the investment.
