| The Snaefell tower is on the move

The timber section of our new hybrid communications tower was collected from Berkshire-based McCurdy & Co. yesterday by R E Shuttleworths of Lancaster, who transported it on two low-loaders.

Today, it's being ferried across to the Isle of Man, before heading to Jurby Airfield, where it will await its next journey: being airlifted to the summit of Snaefell.

This specialist timberwork was fabricated by McCurdy & Co., whose impressive portfolio includes historic timber-frame reconstruction projects such as the reconstruction of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.

It's another major milestone in the largest contract in LARS' history – the design, fabrication and installation of a new hybrid communications tower for NATS on Snaefell, 621m above sea level. More here:

| Snaefell Update

We recently shared the news of the biggest contract win in LARS’ history – the delivery of a hybrid communications tower for NATS at the summit of Snaefell on the Isle of Man.

Well, work is underway.

These images show the trial build of sections 4, 5 and 6 of the actual tower prior to galvanising. This temporary assembly is a vital part of the process, allowing our fabrication team to check everything and make any adjustments before the sections are finished and prepared for installation.

For a project as complex and remote as Snaefell, this level of preparation is essential, particularly for a tower destined for one of the most challenging and remote locations in the British Isles.

Introducing our Timber Inspection and Condition Surveys for hybrid telecommunications towers.

Hybrid towers use timber upper sections to minimise RF interference, but these structures require expert assessment to stay safe, compliant and fit for service.

That’s where our specialist climbing engineers come in.

Unlike conventional inspection companies limited by MEWPs and cherry pickers, our specialist climbing capability means we can inspect every timber element, even on sites with restricted access. This means operators get a complete picture of structural condition, not a partial one.

Our TRADA‑trained engineers carry out full‑height visual and invasive assessments to detect early signs of:

👉 Fungal decay

👉 Structural weakness

👉 Defects such as splits, fissures, distortion and slope‑of‑grain issues

All inspections follow BS 4978 (softwood) and BS EN 16737 (hardwood), with particular focus on plated connection points, the areas most prone to wet rot.

Every survey includes:

• Full‑height timber assessment

• Deep drilling density testing to detect early‑stage wet rot

• Photographic defect recording

• Prioritised fault grading with recommended actions

• Estimated repair costs

• Timber Condition Certificate confirming safe access status

By tailoring survey intervals to each site's microclimate, we help operators stay ahead of deterioration, avoid emergency repairs and extend the life of valuable tower assets.

LARS Wins Biggest Contract in Company History.

We're thrilled to announce that LARS has secured the largest contract award in our history – the supply and installation of a new hybrid communications tower for NATS on the summit of Snaefell in the Isle of Man.

Standing 621 metres above sea level, Snaefell presents one of the most challenging installation environments in the British Isles. With limited access to the summit, sections of the tower will be transported by helicopter before being assembled on site – making this a truly unique project for our team.

The new tower will support critical aviation communications infrastructure and help NATS continue to deliver safe and reliable air traffic services around the Isle of Man.

Work is already underway, with the tower expected to be operational by summer 2027. We're excited to be part of this fantastic project and look forward to sharing updates as it progresses.

Another - this time to 2020 and one of our most unique challenges – decommissioning a weather station on the remote, uninhabited island of Sule Skerry, 35 miles west of Orkney.

No skip. No disposal facilities. A designated Special Protection Area teeming with puffins, gannets and seals. A tiny window of opportunity between breeding seasons. And the only way in? By helicopter.

Working alongside PDG Aviation Services and with guidance from Scottish Natural Heritage, we successfully dismantled and removed the structures back to the mainland with minimal disruption to the island’s wildlife.

Projects like this are a reminder of what can be achieved with the right planning, teamwork and a genuine can-do attitude.

A huge thank you again to everyone involved in making this unique operation a success.

to one of our most memorable decommissioning projects – the controlled demolition of a 135m guyed mast at the Mablethorpe Remote Radio Station in Lincolnshire.

From detailed ecological surveys and safety planning to precision explosive demolition and full site clearance, this project showcased the expertise, coordination and care our team brings to every complex structural decommissioning operation.

After standing since 1991, the mast was safely brought down with minimal environmental impact and zero disruption to the surrounding area.
