We've recently been reviewing the social media performance of a business that's seeing good organic improvement.

There is definitely potential to add paid advertising, but we're not rushing into it.

Why?

Because throwing money at something isn't automatically the next step.

Sometimes it's worth allowing organic activity to settle, looking properly at what audiences respond to and making sure the tracking and foundations are right before increasing spend.

I think there's far too much pressure in marketing to add another tactic constantly. More doesn't always mean better.

Occasionally the best advice I can give a client is simply, "Not yet."

Are you adding marketing activity because you need it, or because you feel like you should be doing more?

I get asked about SEO versus Google Ads quite a lot, and my answer for many small businesses is usually to build the SEO foundations first.

PPC can put you in front of customers quickly, but you're paying for that visibility. Once the budget stops, so do the ads.

SEO takes longer, but you're investing in your own website and building visibility over time. Good SEO can help the right people find you repeatedly without paying every time someone clicks.

There are absolutely times when PPC makes sense, particularly for short campaigns or when you need visibility quickly. I just don't think it should automatically be the first answer.

If you've got a limited marketing budget, I'd usually rather help you build something you own.

MYTH: If you need more enquiries, start spending money on ads.

TRUTH: Sometimes the best thing you can do is fix everything that happens before and after the click.

Paid advertising can be brilliant, but sending more people to a confusing website, unclear offer or poor enquiry process isn't going to solve the problem. You'll simply pay to discover the problem faster.

Before increasing ad spend, I'd always look at the foundations. Is your website doing its job? Is the messaging clear? Can people easily contact you? And, importantly, what happens when somebody does enquire?

Sometimes the smartest marketing decision is knowing when not to spend more money.

One thing I love about THMC is that no two weeks ever look quite the same.

Recently we've been working across social media, SEO, websites, campaign planning, event materials and broader marketing management. Some clients need us to take something completely off their hands, while others just need a bit of direction and an extra pair of hands to keep things moving.

That variety is probably my favourite part of the job. I get to learn about completely different industries, meet some brilliant people and solve a lot of different problems along the way.

Marketing support doesn't always fit neatly into one box, and that's exactly how we like it.

What has been keeping you busiest in your business lately?

People often ask me what my favourite part of running The Handy Marketing Company is.

It's not winning new clients or seeing projects go live, although those moments are always exciting. For me, it's the people.

It's the brilliant clients who trust us with their business, the conversations over coffee, the laughs during meetings, and the long-term relationships we've built over the last six years. It's also my amazing support network, my family, friends and, of course, Nelly, who's never far away from the action and firmly believes she's Head of Office Morale.

Running a business can be challenging, but it's also incredibly rewarding. I'm genuinely grateful to everyone who's been part of the journey so far, and I'm excited to see what comes next.

Whether you've been a client, a supplier, a supporter, or simply followed our journey, thank you. It genuinely means a lot.

One of the hardest lessons I've learned over the last six years is that saying "no" is sometimes the right thing to do.

When I first started THMC, I found it really difficult. I'd squeeze in "quick jobs", answer emails late into the evening and do the odd favour because I wanted to help. The problem was, every hour I spent working for free was an hour I wasn't spending on my own business or my paying clients.

These days I'm much better at protecting my time. That doesn't mean I don't care, quite the opposite. It means I can give my clients the attention they deserve without constantly feeling like I'm chasing my tail.

If you're running your own business, remember that your time has value too. Don't be afraid to protect it.

There's a lot of advice on social media telling business owners they need to be on camera every day, pointing at text, following trends and dancing around the office.

Personally, I think that's nonsense.

Should people see the face behind the business? Absolutely. People buy from people.

Do you need to make your social media look like an audition for Britain's Got Talent? Definitely not.

I probably appear on THMC's social media once a month, and that's enough. I'd much rather create useful content consistently than force myself into videos that don't feel authentic.

Find a style that suits you. Your audience will appreciate honesty far more than the latest trend.

Have you ever avoided creating content because it didn't feel like "you"?

One of the nicest parts of my job is seeing clients grow over the years.

I've worked with AccuGrit for around five years now, and it's been a genuine pleasure watching the business go from strength to strength. I truly believe the real reason they've been so successful is the people behind it.

They're ambitious, they care about their customers, and they're genuinely one of the nicest teams you'll ever meet. It makes my job incredibly easy when I'm working with businesses that are passionate about what they do.

Long-term relationships like this are what running THMC is all about, and I hope there are many more years to come.

I'm always grateful to work with such fantastic clients. Thank you for trusting us to be part of your journey.

One of the biggest myths about running your own business is that you somehow end up with loads of free time.

I'd genuinely love to know where mine is!

Like most business owners, my weeks are a mixture of client meetings, emails, planning, admin, accounts, networking and trying to remember what I walked into a room for. Running a business isn't just doing the job you're good at; it's wearing about twenty different hats every day.

Would I swap it? Not a chance.

There's something incredibly rewarding about building something that's yours, even if it does occasionally mean answering emails with a coffee in one hand and a to-do list in the other.

I was asked recently to describe myself in three words.

Funny. Loyal. Clumsy.

The last one has probably got me into more trouble than I'd care to admit, and is largely responsible for me recently undergoing a third knee operation. What started as a daft accident has had a much bigger impact than I ever imagined.

It's also taught me something quite valuable. You never really know what someone is dealing with behind the scenes. Most people I meet through work probably wouldn't know I'm classed as disabled, and that's absolutely fine. It doesn't define me, but it has shaped me.

I still love what I do, still enjoy working with brilliant businesses and still believe a good sense of humour gets you through most things.
