Shared Purpose #05: In this week's issue, we give examples of 6 ways employees can bring your brand to life -

In this week’s issue, I want to share some straight-forward examples of how employees can talk authentically on social media about the company they work for.

What are you going to do differently this year?

Now the January blues and the whole New Years resolution thing is out of the way (which never work for me), I can think properly about the year ahead.

I never find January is the best time to do this.

Whether you're a company of 1 or part of a company of 1000s - what will make 2023 different for you?

3 things I'm going to do differently:

(To be honest these are things i've been working on for a while, but I'm going to really focus on them now).

1. Really understand what I love at work

This might seem an odd thing to say - but it can be easy to get lost in the day to day and what you have been doing historically. Endlessly doing something you don't love isn't much fun.

This doesn't mean changing your job or starting a new company. It does mean reflecting - how does what you do relate to what you love? How you can focus your energy in the best way?

I did my Ikigai - a Japanese concept which means 'reason for being' which helped me pinpoint particular interests.

I've started journalling every day. It's really helping me understand my thinking more clearly and get stuff out of my head.

I've found by understanding what you love, you can start to share that passion at work - with colleagues, with customers. It's really inspiring to see it in others.

2. Conversations Conversations Conversations

Conversations are where the magic happens. I've discovered again and again that they lead to new opportunities - of all kinds. Often in quite unexpected places.

But as a natural introvert this has been ongoing challenge in my life. I'm not a natural conversation starter - certainly not with strangers.

But to make things happen you need to be visible. You need to put your opinion out there. You need to start conversations.

This is one of the great benefits of Linkedin - why I'm such an advocate of it. It is generally a positive, supportive space to share opinions, find your tribe and start conversations.

I generally aim to post 5 days a week. But this year, I plan to engage with and start more conversations both in comments and in DMs.

3. Just do it

It's so often said that ideas are easy - it's the ex*****on that counts.

This is really true.

Executing an idea - especially if it's complex or requires consistent behaviour over the long term - is really hard.

But even starting in the first place is challenging. The doubts quickly start coming in and the idea is squashed before it even gets off the ground.

The worst thing is you then see someone else doing the idea.

I plan to 'just do it' a lot more often this year and test and learn as I go along.

Helping you launch happy employee advocates

14 reasons why someone happily be a social media ambassador for where they work:

- Because they love working there
- Because its got a great culture
- Because they're inspired by the leadership
- Because it has a purpose beyond profit which they buy into
- Because they get recognition and feedback on what they do
- Because it shares their values
- Because they love the products or services
- Because the purpose is as important for employees as for customers
- Because the organisation really wants them to succeed
- Because their team mates are there for each other
- Because the company thinks about their wellbeing
- Because they're excited by the brand values
- Because the brand is well communicated internally
- Because they feel their work makes a difference

What would you add?

31/01/2023

If I said that with 1% of your employees active on social you could achieve more than 10x what your brand channels can achieve.

Would you go for it?

Many don't...

Not because it won't work.
Not because there isn't the data to prove it
Not because there aren't the case studies.

We've achieved all this with our clients.

But there's a bigger challenge for many.

Change.

Many companies decide that sticking with existing models is a better approach - even if they offer decreasing returns or just don't work anymore.

Selling in new ideas is harder.

But the world is changing.
Customers are changing.
Employees are changing.

Companies need to adapt to keep up.
Or they will be sitting there with an empty pipeline and decreasing customers.

- The world needs businesses with a purpose beyond just profit
- Customers see social media as the new shop floor
- Employees expect to be able to communicate at work how they do elsewhere

So if you want the kind of results employee advocacy can deliver.
How can you make this change happen?

The answer is to experiment.
Make experimenting part of your culture.

- Test the water with a small group
- Gather the evidence to show it's worth doing on a bigger scale
- Research and manage the risks
- Get allies onboard
- Tell a positive story to decision makers

Sometimes being successful at work is less about just working longer days, writing the perfect report, coming up with a clever idea.

Sometimes it's more about this...

Visibility.

It doesn't matter how great your results are if YOU aren't seen by your boss, your colleagues or customers.

If you change how you're seen by others you will find many opportunities come your way.
