On a crag of black basalt above the North Sea stands Bamburgh Castle —
one of the oldest royal fortresses in England, and the real Bebbanburg
of Uhtred from "The Last Kingdom."
In this documentary we trace fourteen centuries of history from the air
and the ground: the ancient stronghold of Din Guardi; King Ida and the
birth of Bernicia; Queen Bebba, who gave Bebbanburg its name; the golden
age of Northumbria and holy Lindisfarne; the fury of the Vikings; the
last stand of Wessex under Alfred the Great; and Æthelstan, the first
King of the English — the birth of England itself. From Norman keep to
Victorian restoration, Bamburgh endures.
