💾 How to spot a dying hard drive before you lose your data

If your computer is starting to act “off”, it might not just be age — it could be a failing hard drive. Catching it early can make the difference between a simple fix and permanent data loss.

Here are 3 key warning signs to look out for:

1️⃣ Slow performance & constant spinning circles – everything takes ages to open or load
2️⃣ Clicking or grinding noises – especially from laptops or older PCs
3️⃣ Random blue screens or crashes – happening without warning

If you notice any of these, stop using the device as much as possible and make sure you back up your data immediately. Continued use can make the problem worse and increase the risk of full drive failure.

☕ Able to make a cuppa while your computer turns on?

Chances are, your hard drive is the problem.

Older machines often use traditional HDDs (spinning disk and needle), which degrade over time and usage — slowing everything down, from startup to opening programs.

Upgrading to a solid-state drive (SSD) is one of the best ways to bring your device back up to speed, without replacing the whole system.

There can be other causes too, like CPU or RAM limitations — so I’m always happy to run diagnostics and provide a free quote.

💻 Does your laptop or console sound like a jet engine?

Over time, dust, pet hair, and even blanket fibres can build up inside your device and clog the fans. When that happens, your system can’t cool itself properly - so it works harder, runs hotter, and starts to slow down. Left too long, that heat can lead to real damage.

A quick blast of air isn’t always enough. I carry out a proper internal clean, removing built-up debris and reapplying fresh, high-quality thermal paste when needed.

If your device is overheating, slowing down, or getting louder than usual - it’s worth getting it checked before it becomes a bigger (and more expensive) issue.
