Speedwell Rev Counter

Speedwell Rev Counter Weston Speedwell auto instrumentation. The Classic 60s rev-counter recreated. A vintage style aircraft instrument for classic cars!!

To create an authentic instrument we've sourced new moving coil/galvanometer style movements of a similar type to the original. Modern instrumentation manufacturers predominately utilise stepper motor technology. The original cases are of course very difficult to source although we were lucky in acquiring several new/old stock units. These cases have funded development and manufacture of a short

run of new cases closely based on the original. Modern manufacturing techniques have allowed the production of an anodised aluminium case rather than the original steel one which could rust quite severely. The rear cap was originally bakelite but again modern materials have been used. As with the original, substantial brass insert terminals have been incorporated rather than the cheap connectors used on modern instruments. These new instruments are built to what is essentially a military aircraft standard of quality. Hence their flight gauge appearance. Look at the control panel of the AVRO Vulcan bomber and you will see very similar instruments.

Here's a gauge looking rather at home in a Lotus 7 dashboard. Car is currently being restored. The owner went for a plain aluminium mounting bezel as opposed to the usual black anodized version. These aren't usually available and just the result of a couple somehow being missed by the CNC company when the batch was sent to be anodized.
Many thanks for you kind permission to reproduce the image here Andy.

Soak testing an 8K gauge at the moment. As you can see, accuracy is pretty good for what is quite old technology. You'd probably be hard pushed to beat it with a 'modern'. The 'modern' would probably track the step change of the revs from my simulator rather than overshoot. This of course would never be a real life event, my simulator is for calibration and linearity checks.
Final tweak & it looks pretty good.

Probably spoken for already.
All in unusually good condition for what is a circa 60 year old gauge.

Almost there, we've found a potential source of movements very similar to those used by Speedwell. Hopefully something to offer in the next couple of months.
We've had disappointing results with air-core movements which don't appear to get close to manufacturers claims for linearity. They may however be suitable for getting old Speedwell gauges working again where the movement has failed (replacing the electronics is the easier part of the task). We'll persist with them so we are able to offer a simple solution to owners of original gauges.

I'm guessing that the demand for repair units is probably minimal but please message me if you have a need and I'll devote some time to the project.

In the meantime - here are a couple of images of an air core gauge plus movement.

I think this car maybe Sebring Sprite WJB707 - image taken at the Sprite fiftieth Goodwood.

Correction - Probably Sebring Sprite ~ 410 EAO

Here's a gauge I spotted on Martin Ingall's Sebring Sprite website (definitely worth a visit if you're not aware of it already.

Changed hands for £350.00 too.

If you missed this gauge then I should have one available shortly - currently on soak test. Let me know if you're interested.
