Text analytics is a hot topic in survey analysis - it’s something that comes up in virtually every conversation we have! Balancing the desire to be using the best technology with all the potential pitfalls around data sovereignty, AI hallucination and environmental responsibility (to name a few) makes it a tricky tightrope to walk when it is not your specialism. Beyond all of that, meaningful, useful, actionable text analysis is a deep art, that takes familiarity with the subject as well as the technology.

We have a long history of fascination with the presentation of verbatim (open text) survey responses, and as we roll out our latest enhancements to SurveyOptic, Benjamin Ellis takes a look at where it all started: https://socialoptic.com/2026/03/theres-something-we-need-to-tell-our-word-clouds/

When it comes to survey-time, does your organisational structure give you a headache?

Survey tools, and HR tools in general, are not built to deal with the fluid complexities which are the reality of modern organisations. Without this support, the data you gather cannot effectively reveal the insights that it holds. Frustration on the way in and again on the way out!

We built SurveyOptic to solve this problem. In today's dynamic business environment, understanding and managing organisational hierarchies is more critical than ever. Hierarchies are not simple, static structures, they are complex, evolving maps, and need a fresh approach.

In this article, we delve into the representation of organisational hierarchies and explore how advanced techniques like hypergraphs provide a strategic advantage.

The Power of a 360° View—Why One Survey Isn’t Enough :
Relying on a single survey to understand your employees is like trying to see the whole picture through a keyhole. You might catch a glimpse, but you’ll miss the full story.

To get real, actionable insights, you need a variety of surveys—each designed for a different purpose:

📊 Engagement surveys – Measure motivation and morale.
🔄 Pulse surveys – Get real-time feedback on what’s working (or not).
🎯 Onboarding & exit surveys – Uncover what attracts and retains talent.
📢 DEI & compliance surveys – Ensure alignment with company values and legal requirements.
🔍 360° feedback surveys – Gather well-rounded insights on leadership and performance.

A strategic mix of these surveys helps uncover patterns, predict challenges, and drive real change.

Join our webinar to discover:

What’s your wishlist for your ideal survey platform? Might it include ..

- That you can use it yourself (think – I just need to do this little thing, if only I could see this thing)
- That you could set up a survey and it would just go (think – you want invite all your new joiners two weeks after they start throughout the year)
- That you could see how a cohort were thinking and feeling across all the surveys they’ve filled out (think - do unhappy customers impact engagement, how does wellbeing impact on retention?)
- That you could create and define audiences for your suite of surveys
- That you could confidently answer GDPR and security questions about the data you are collecting
- That your surveys could neatly flow into relevant action plans that you have visibility of
- That you had support from a team that understand what you need to achieve

If those points sit high on your wishlist, it might be time to explore a platform built for organisations that are ready to mature their approach. Because when your survey tools evolve, so do your outcomes. With clearer data ownership, automated workflows, richer insights and a team behind you who genuinely understands the journey you’re on, you don’t just run surveys — you influence decisions, drive measurable change and create experiences that people trust.

Upgrading your platform isn’t just a tech choice; it’s a strategic advantage.

If this sounds like the wishlist you’ve been carrying around, let’s talk about what’s possible.

Individual survey findings can be interesting. Informative even.
A pulse score here. An onboarding rating there. A wellbeing snapshot from last quarter.
But the real value lies in how they connect.

Engagement, onboarding, retention, wellbeing, service experience — these don’t exist in isolation. They influence each other constantly. A poor onboarding experience can quietly erode engagement. Low wellbeing can show up months later as attrition. Service frustrations can ripple into team morale.

Yet in many organisations, the data sits in silos.
Different survey platforms. Different dashboards. Different owners.
Each tool tells its own story — but no one sees the full narrative.

When data lives across multiple systems, joining the dots becomes difficult, slow, or simply impossible. Leaders end up reacting to fragments instead of patterns. Decisions are made on partial insight. Energy is spent debating which metric matters most, rather than understanding how they interact.

Streamlining survey platforms isn’t an IT exercise.
It’s a strategic decision.

It’s about creating a connected view of the employee or customer journey.
It’s about spotting leading indicators instead of waiting for lagging ones.
It’s about moving from reporting to real insight.

When engagement data can be viewed alongside onboarding outcomes…
When wellbeing trends can be analysed against retention risk…
When service experience feedback is connected to team performance…

That’s when insight becomes actionable.

The goal isn’t fewer surveys for the sake of efficiency.
It’s clarity.
It’s coherence.
It’s the ability to make decisions based on how experiences actually unfold — not how they appear in separate dashboards.

Individual survey results can be interesting.
Connected insight is transformative.

Balancing the cost and benefits of deploying AI with the risks and ethics of using it with sensitive staff information can feel like a narrow tightrope to navigate. The more informed you can be about the risks and benefits of where your data is being processed, the better placed you will be to make safe and strategic decisions.

Good Business Week 2026 – what to look for when selecting a supplier:

One thing we are noticing recently, is organisations working collaboratively with their suppliers to raise standards, not just meet minimums.

In public services especially, quality, social value and workforce wellbeing don’t sit neatly within organisational boundaries - they’re shaped across whole supply chains.
That’s why this year’s Good Business Week theme, “Raising the bar together”, really resonates with us.

As a Good Business Charter–accredited organisation, we hold ourselves to the same standards we encourage others to evidence: fair work, staff voice, wellbeing and continuous improvement. And increasingly, we’re supporting organisations and their suppliers to do this collectively, not in isolation.

We’re seeing commissioners and funders place growing weight on:
• How organisations treat and support their people
• Whether workforce evidence is credible and transparent
• How values translate into day-to-day delivery, not just policy

Surveying staff— when done well — is becoming a practical way for organisations and their suppliers to:
• Demonstrate service quality and consistency
• Evidence meaningful social value
• Build commissioner confidence through defensible data

For us, raising the bar together means:
• Partnering early, not scrambling late
• Using staff voice ethically, not performatively
• Turning values into evidence that stands up to scrutiny

Good business isn’t about doing this alone.
It’s about working together across organisations and supply chains to meet higher expectations properly.

💬 Interested to hear how others are collaborating with partners and suppliers to strengthen workforce evidence this year.

Much insight packed into this short walk-n-talk from SocialOptic founder and CEO Benjamin Ellis

Culture is an operating system, not a side project:
Is culture a risk or a strength in your organisation? In today's world we talk about culture a lot in organisations, and culture in the public domain. The two are colliding, but when culture fragments, it doesn’t announce itself. It shows up as small signals.

A question for leaders:
How confident are you that you understand your organisation’s culture as it is actually experienced — not just as it is intended to be?

How many survey platforms are in use in your organisation?Chances are you can name at least a couple, but what about tho...

How many survey platforms are in use in your organisation?

Chances are you can name at least a couple, but what about those used on your behalf via agencies? What about those being used spontaneously by colleagues?

Has anyone ever stopped to consider the implications of these multiple tools?

Here is some food for thought:
💡 Loss of insight: This is the Number One issue that often slips by entirely unnoticed! By having your data spread across multiple platforms, you cannot triangulate between it. The initial question may have been answered, but what is being missed is how things impact each other. How does your new joiner experience impact on retention or engagement? How does service user information impact on staff wellbeing? This is often far more strategically valuable information which cannot be harnessed when data is spread about the organisation.
💷 Financial inefficiency: Multiple platforms almost always translate to higher costs.
💻 Increased data protection risk: Data protection becomes harder when data is spread about, especially if it is not all accounted for. This can balloon into retention, jurisdiction and sovereignty issues. Many risks may be unknown and therefore not possible to mitigate.
🪪 Increased data security risk: More platforms mean higher likelihood that team members who have left or moved to other projects aren't removed. More systems mean higher likelihood of a security breach.
📉 Declining data quality: Data quality will drop when staff or service users are constantly being asked to complete forms, assessments and surveys by different people and departments, when there is no thought given to consistency and timings.

If you’ve been starting to think along these lines and would like a sounding board to explore what streamlining these tools might look like, we’d really love to help. Drop us a message and let’s see how things could be different.
