🌾 Mid-season ryegrass in our clients winter wheat - Here’s how we found it and provided prescription maps. Result? Only spray what needs treating.

Ryegrass is a zero-tolerance problem on arable farms. One plant sets tens of thousands of seeds, and resistance makes whole-field spraying a decision you don’t want to keep repeating. But without knowing exactly where the infestation is, blanket treatment is often the only option.

This Hampshire winter wheat farm wanted a map precise enough to drive a sprayer prescription — so that’s what we built.

🔍 What the survey found:

• Ryegrass at ~4.5% of the field area — scattered, not zoned
• Prescription spray area: just 0.92ha out of 4.70ha surveyed
• Individual nozzle control at 50 cm = 61% herbicide saving

📦 And because the multispectral data is already captured, the same flight also delivers NDVI and NDRE vigour maps — meaning one flight can produce both a precision herbicide prescription and a variable rate nitrogen map.

The prescription shapefile is delivered ready for import into standard precision ag platforms, including ISOXML for direct ISOBUS terminal upload.

BackgroundRye grass is a zero-tolerance problem on most arable farms. A single plant sets tens of thousands of seeds, and those seeds persist in the soil for years — so a light infestation that gets to set seed compounds quickly. The usual response is whole-field herbicide treatment, which works, ...

🌱Mid-season crop analysis

A mixed arable holding in the Vale of White Horse wanted answers before committing to late-season inputs. Were their spring barley crops struggling, or just slow? Where exactly was the variability sitting across 13 fields?

A whole-farm multispectral drone survey told them — before the agronomist even arrived on farm.

✅ 🌱 Mid-season crop analysis Best fields confirmed healthy — 98% of one barley field in the good vigour band
⚠️ Two fields flagged immediately — one with nearly half its area below acceptable thresholds, with a clear spatial pattern pointing to drainage or soil type changes
🌾 The grassland and herbal leys? Strong and even — useful documentation for SFI and CSS scheme records too

The result? The agronomist showed up with a map, not a mystery. No full day walking fields on gut feel — straight to the problem zones with a specific brief.

That’s the difference data makes.
