Hump Day Hacks 💡

With the clocks going back at the end of the month and the evenings drawing in earlier, a lot of us will be settling in for proper film nights again. If a new telly is on your list before Christmas, here's the plain-English version of OLED vs QLED vs LED.

Picture the scene in autumn 1967. A television dealer flips open a notebook, tunes in to BBC2, and waits for the day's Service Information bulletin — three times every weekday, brought in specifically to keep the trade in the loop as colour television edged closer.

The first of those bulletins aired on 23 October 1967. They weren't for viewers at home; they were technical briefings for dealers and engineers, sharing the status and availability of colour transmitters ahead of BBC2's full colour launch on 2 December 1967.

It was a genuinely new chapter for the showroom. Colour sets were on sale, with prices around £260 to £350 (the Baird 705 sitting at the entry point at 245 guineas), and a new £10 colour licence was on its way for 1 January 1968 — double the existing £5 black-and-white fee.

For the retail trade, it meant learning fast, advising carefully, and helping households take a considered step into a whole new way of watching. Nearly sixty years on, that spirit of guiding customers through change is still what a good electrical shop is all about.

Beyond size and programmes, how a dishwasher loads, dries and sounds is what you notice day to day. Look for an adjustable top basket and fold-down racks for flexible loading. Decide between a cutlery basket in the lower rack or a shallow tray up top. Most machines dry using heat from the final rinse, and some open the door or use a fan to help; rinse aid makes a real difference whichever system you have. Plastics tend to come out wetter. Finally, check the decibel figure on the energy label if your kitchen is open-plan or you run it overnight.

Hump Day Hacks: get more from your tumble dryer 🧺

With the clocks going back and the evenings drawing in, the dryer starts working a bit harder this time of year. A few small habits make a real difference to how well it runs — and how much energy it uses.

The single most important one? Clean the lint filter after every load. Doesn't matter whether it's a heat pump, condenser or vented model — a blocked filter chokes airflow, slows drying, pushes up your energy use and, in bad cases, becomes a fire risk. It's usually just inside the front door opening (your manual will confirm).

If you've a heat pump or condenser dryer, empty the water container after each cycle too — a full one will pause the machine. And on heat pump models, check the manual for the heat exchanger: some are self-cleaning, others need a gentle rinse now and then to keep efficiency up.

A couple more that quietly help: don't overload the drum (warm air needs room to move), separate heavier items like towels and jeans from lighter fabrics, and always check care labels before tumbling.

Finally — if your dryer has a sensor programme, use it in preference to timed cycles. It stops when the load is dry, so you're not over-drying, not wasting energy, and you're gentler on your fabrics.
