🎃 THE SCARIEST THING ABOUT HALLOWEEN? HOW MUCH FOOD WE THROW AWAY.

Millions of pumpkins go uneaten in the UK at Halloween. Hubbub’s 2023 research estimated a staggering 15.8 MILLION. That’s a lot of potential dinners disappearing into the bin.

And after heat and drought hit some British pumpkin growers hard this year, every pumpkin deserves a little more appreciation. 🧡

🌾 PICK LOCAL
A pumpkin-picking trip means fresh air, autumn colour and a chance for children to discover where food comes from. Buying directly supports the farm, too. Check opening details before travelling, as some patches have cancelled this year.

Ask which varieties are best for cooking—and whether they have certified organic options. Local doesn’t automatically mean organic!

🥣 MAKE MORE OF YOUR PUMPKIN
• Roast the flesh with olive oil, garlic and herbs.
• Make warming soup, curry or risotto.
• Blend cooked pumpkin into purée for muffins or pancakes.
• Clean and roast the seeds for a crunchy topping.
• Freeze cooked flesh or purée in portions for another day.

✨ MORE THAN A DECORATION
Pumpkin provides fibre and beta-carotene, which your body converts into vitamin A to support normal vision and immune function. The seeds offer protein, magnesium and healthy fats.

🌿 There’s more to organic shopping than the supermarket aisle.

Our Supermarket Watch has had a wonderful response—but local farm shops deserve some love too. 💚

We’re compiling a list of UK farm shops for Officially Organic, including details of where you can find organic produce.

And what a lovely way to shop: browsing seasonal fruit and veg, discovering local makers, chatting to people who know their produce—and perhaps stopping for coffee and a slice of cake. 🍎☕ It can turn the weekly food shop into a little outing to look forward to.

Buying from your local farm shop helps support independent businesses and, when you choose locally grown produce, the farmers behind your food.

🌱 Local doesn’t automatically mean organic, so look for organic certification or ask what’s available. We want our list to help you find both.

WE WENT TO M&S TO SEE IF THE ORGANIC PRICE CUTS WERE REALLY AS GOOD AS THEY SOUNDED… 👀🌱

And we found a LOT more than we expected.

🥦 Organic broccoli
🍎 Organic apples & pears
🍌 Organic bananas
🥣 Organic oats & granola
🫖 Organic tea
🥜 A surprisingly good variety of organic nuts
🌱 Organic houmous
🍇 Organic prunes

…and plenty more.

After hearing that M&S had reduced prices across more than 50 organic products, we wanted to get away from the press releases and see for ourselves what shoppers can actually find in store.

And this is exactly what Officially Organic Supermarket Watch is about.

Not just asking “Does a supermarket sell organic?”

But…

How much choice is there?
How easy is it to find?
And crucially — is organic becoming more affordable?

What we saw at M&S was encouraging. 🌱

Organic is moving beyond the occasional premium product and becoming something you could realistically add to more of your everyday shop.

Now the big question is:

Will the other supermarkets follow? 👀

Something interesting has happened in the supermarket aisles this September.

Organic prices have been falling — and some of them haven’t bounced back.

🥕 M&S organic carrots are still 90p
🥕 Ocado organic carrots are £1.15
🥔 Waitrose British organic potatoes are £1.70 for 1.5kg
🌱 Waitrose is still running reductions across selected Duchy Organic produce.

But some of the big Organic September promotions are beginning to disappear.

So now comes the REALLY interesting question…

Were supermarkets simply promoting organic for September — or are we finally seeing a longer-term shift towards more affordable organic food?

M&S has just made a £4 MILLION investment in organic, cutting prices across more than 50 organic products in a move designed to make organic food more affordable and accessible.

And there are some significant reductions:

🥕 Organic carrots — £1.25 → 90p
🥔 Organic potatoes — £2.65 → £1.70
🥒 Organic cucumber — £1.65 → £1.30
🌶️ Organic mixed peppers — £2.25 → £1.75
🥚 6 organic medium eggs — £3.00 → £2.60
🥛 Organic full-fat milk — £2.40 → £2.00
🍝 Organic fusilli — £2.30 → £1.90

And some organic favourites are being added to M&S’s Remarksable Value range, where prices are benchmarked against competitors.

This is exactly what we want to see. 👏🌱

Since launching our Officially Organic Supermarket Watch, we’ve been asking which supermarkets are genuinely making organic easier to find and more affordable.

We’ve already seen some interesting moves from Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Ocado.
