On a recent train journey on Avanti West Coast from London to Manchester I decided to draw an illustrated portrait of Sister Rosetta Tharpe as a huge thank you to my friend, broadcaster and social historian Karen Gabay who has worked tirelessly and selflessly in honouring this incredible music icon with a blue plaque in our city.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe performed in Manchester in 1964 as part of Granada TVs ‘Blues and Gospel Train’ show and her standing in music culture as an influence for the likes of Elvis Presley, Little Richard and Chuck Berry amongst many others is a legacy that deserves to be celebrated. This is just my nod to a black music and cultural icon and a thank you to Kaz for her amazing work in gaining recognition for a woman who changed history and played a part in shaping so much of the music we all know and love today.

My illustration was initially just going to be a pen line drawing as the images show and as it developed I decided to shade and add a little more detail. Drawing on a moving train is never easy but I’m proud I have managed to gain a likeness in a couple of hours and today after cleaning up the paper and adding more detail and highlights I have a portrait that captures this wonderful black music icon.

Sketching style artwork for a new creative education project. I’ll update when I fully illustrate this new character with colour and context. I was a games character illustrator back in the day so this is a great project to work on

My oil painting of Radiohead frontman and one of my music heroes Thom Yorke is starting to come together. I’m only painting half of his portrait as I have a new idea for the other half! Watch this space for updates as this artwork will be part of a special exhibition later in the year. Let me know what you think so far?

I’ve recently designed and hand-painted a few sets of inspired glasses for Creative Eyewear Collective and for a range of clients and private buyers. It was a proud moment as a fan of Take That to not only see Howard Donald wearing my glasses but to get a personal thank-you message from him. What a true gent and what a legend to take the time to do that! Artwork has the power to transform and connect people and I’m really proud of this new design and the simple message it conveys. ‘If you know you know’ is always my creative mantra and a subtle nod to my clubbing days was the inspiration behind this new design. If you want to explore new eyewear and unique artwork drop me a message.
