No fancy formula needed, thankfully. I just had a scroll through a few client sites recently (including my own, glass houses and all that) and noticed a pattern.

See if any of this sounds familiar:

Your About page still sounds like the business you were three years ago, not the one you've grown into.

Your services list is missing the thing you're best known for now.

Your pricing page has packages you retired ages ago but never got round to removing.

And somewhere in there is a testimonial from a client whose logo you don't even recognise anymore.

None of that's a disaster. It just means your website stopped growing at some point, while you kept going. It happens to the best of us, it's just easy to miss when you're the one working on it.

So really, my calculations say: it's time your site caught up with you.

Who else has a website stuck in 2023 (or earlier, no judgement)?

In an ideal world, wine wouldn’t give you brutal hangovers as soon as you turn 35. I wouldn’t be allergic to all animals ever. And every single business owner would have enough cash to invest in their branding AND website in one go.

Unfortunately, though. wine hangovers are the worst. Little fluffy creatures are still a no-go for me.
And, of course, some of you ARE going to have to choose between investing in branding OR a website.

So how do you know which to tackle first? It feels like a chicken and egg scenario…but it’s not.

As someone who’s been designing branding and websites for more years than I care to mention, I always recommend starting with the branding.

I know that sounds counter-intuitive. After all, your website is often the thing that actually brings people (and much needed cash flow!) to your business.

But here’s the thing about branding.

It sets the tone and visual style for EVERYTHING that follows. From your packaging to your social media posts, even how you decorate your premises.

And, of course, it sets the visual tone for your website.

Which means, that if you drop thousands on a website straight out of the gate, when you do come to invest in branding, you’ll have to pay EXTRA for a website redesign to bring everything in line with your new visual identity.

Are you considering a rebrand? I’d love to help. Shoot me a DM for a zero-pressure chat.

I'm a web designer. This is embarrassing.

I was updating my 'link in bio' page this week and discovered that every single link was pointing to my homepage. The whole page has been completely useless for who knows how long.

Me. A web designer.

I'll see myself out.

BUT. If it can happen to me, it can happen to you. So consider this your sign to go and check yours right now:

- Does every link in bio go where it's supposed to?
- Does your contact form actually send?
- Do all your homepage buttons work?

Take ten minutes and do it now.

You'll be getting double the value at this table on Monday.

My husband James is exhibiting at The Angus Business Showcase, but because his Mondays are usually back-to-back client meetings all day, he can't actually be there. So I'm donning the tie and stepping in to represent his biz.

He's very kindly offered to share the table with me though. That means you'll get me, Fiona Robertson Graphics, on one side and CleverVA on the other.

James helps neurodivergent entrepreneurs and individuals get the admin off their plate so they can focus on the work they actually love. While I help businesses show up as their amazing, unapologetic selves online, through branding and web design.

If you're in the Angus area, come along and say hello. I'd love to meet you, hear what you're working on, and chat about how we might be able to help.

It's on Monday, 29th June, from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm at Forbes of Kingennie.

It always makes me laugh how few pics there are of hubby and me compared to work-related stuff in my camera roll!

I’ll talk about website accessibility until everyone in the room has quietly made their excuses.

Bear with me though, it really matters.

Because so many people assume that making your website accessible is a big, complicated and expensive job. But, you know what?

There are so many things you can do yourself, right now, without needing to know a thing about code or hire a web developer.

To get you started, here are 3 quick wins:

1. Alt text on every image. Describe what's in the image like you're telling someone over the phone. People using screen readers depend on this to understand your visual content.

2. Make sure your text actually contrasts with your background. Light grey text on a white background looks sleek. But it's also nearly unreadable for a lot of people.

3. Stop writing vague links. "Click here" says nothing about where the link goes or what it’s meant to do. "Download the free brand strategy guide" tells folks exactly what will happen.

These small changes will make a real difference.

And the best bit: improving your accessibility actually makes your site easier for everyone to use.

If you want even more ways you can make your site more accessible right now, James at asked me to share some tips over on his blog. Link in bio to read.

Psst! A branding spot has just opened up in July.

If you've been thinking about it for a while — you know, the 'I really need to sort my branding' thought that pops up every time you share your website link — this might be your sign.

Here's what working together looks like:

- We start with strategy so your brand actually reflects who you are
- A custom-designed logo and brand identity (no templates, no clip art!)
- Brand guidelines so you can use your new visual identity with confidence
- A designer who geeks out and genuinely gets excited about your business

I work with creative founders and small business owners who are ready to show up with branding they're proud of, not just something that'll do for now.

If that sounds like you, drop me a DM or hit the link in my bio to book a free discovery call. No hard sell, just a friendly chat over a (virtual) cuppa.

Nice doesn't pay your invoices.

Let's be honest about what "clean and professional" actually means: it means you built a brand for the client you were scared of losing, not the client you actually want.

You softened the edges. Swapped your actual personality for something you thought was more crowd-pleasing. You made yourself into a cookie-cutter brand that’s easy to say yes to but impossible to feel excited about.

So now you're out here doing bloody brilliant work, but sending folks a link to a site that doesn't come close to showing how amazing you are.

But the thing that makes you bookable isn't your service list. It's your quirks, the specific, slightly-too-honest way you think about your work. It’s the stuff you tried to hide because you worried it felt like too much.

That's the bit that stops the scroll. Let’s put it back.

My top 5 horror movies as a branding and web designer:

1. Make the logo bigger (it really doesn’t need to be *that* big)
2. Colour palettes with no contrast (unreadable text serves no one)
3. Using ChatGPT to give feedback (unfortunately, Chatty has no idea about the strategy we’ve been working on)
4. I made it with AI (yep, we can tell, and that’s why it doesn’t match your brand)
5. Client installed updates without doing a backup first… (so it’s probably gonna take longer to fix, soz)

What would make your list?
