It is one year until the launch of the United Kingdom’s Scheme (DRS). ♻️ From 1 October 2027, a single DRS will operate across England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland, striving to increase the collection and recycling of drink containers.

The DRS will add a 20p deposit to the price of drinks, which is refunded when consumers return the empty containers for recycling. The DRS covers all single-use PET plastic and aluminum/steel drink containers, sized 0.15-3L.

🛒 Grocery retailers will operate as return points (unless exempt), manually or automated with a reverse vending machine.

🎭 What do superhero masks have to do with innovation?
Recently, colleagues at TOMRA Recycling Technologies (TRT) stepped away from their daily work for TRT Innovation Day, an annual opportunity to focus on improvements, new ideas and challenges across the business.💡

Working in cross-functional teams, they explored topics related to products, processes, technology and workplace improvements, with the goal of identifying ideas that can make a real difference. The most promising ideas don't stop when the event ends, but continue to be developed and evaluated throughout the year.

This year, teams were asked to create their own heroes, complete with hand-made masks, and use them as part of their presentations. Encouraging teams to approach challenges from a different angle and think creatively about potential solutions.

📍Based in Xiamen, TRT is a technology and innovation center supporting Asia and emerging markets, and plays an important role across TOMRA Collection.♻️

What does recycling look like at one of Austria’s largest music festivals? ♻️🎵

At NOVA ROCK Festival, around 120,000 beverage containers were returned using TOMRA R1, our multi-feed reverse vending solution designed for busy, high-volume environments.

By enabling users to return more than 100 containers simultaneously, TOMRA R1 helps make recycling quicker, easier and more convenient, while supporting event organizers in collecting valuable materials for recycling.

Sometimes it starts with a pair of gloves and a simple decision to take action. 🌿

Earlier this month, colleagues at TOMRA pulled on their gloves for our annual clean-up around our headquarters, collecting litter and spending time outdoors with colleagues from across teams and departments. 🗑️♻️

While our technology helps keep valuable materials in circulation, local actions like these remind us that everyone has a role to play in reducing waste and protecting the environment.

World Cleanup Day on September 20 brings together millions of people around the globe with a shared goal: creating cleaner communities and building the habits and mindset needed to drive lasting change.

Every piece of litter picked up matters. Every action counts.
How will you take part in World Cleanup Day?

☀️ This summer, we welcomed a talented group of students to our headquarters, bringing fresh perspectives, curiosity and energy to their internship experience.

Christine Næss and Gjermund Bjørnstad joined the Mechanical Department, where they explored how AI can support engineering workflows, with a particular focus on CAD and mechanical design. Along the way, they also gained hands-on experience in design for sustainability and maintenance of 3D printing systems. ⚙️🌱

A big thank you to Christine, Gjermund and all our summer interns for their valuable contributions and great efforts throughout the summer! 👏

💡 Today, the Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) starts applying across Europe.

The PPWR revises previous legislation around packaging and package waste across the European Union’s 27 Member States. It considers packaging’s entire life cycle, from design to post-consumer recovery, setting requirements for separate collection of single-use drink containers and recycled content. ♻️

It is one of the biggest changes to European packaging policy in decades. 🇪🇺 The PPWR aims to reduce the environmental impact of packaging waste and foster a circular economy. ♾️

♻️ A smooth return experience – a better customer experience. For many consumers, returning drink containers is not a separate task, it's the start of their shopping journey. 🍅🥖

Almost 9 in 10 shoppers who return containers use their deposit refund to shop in store, and nearly half return containers as part of their regular grocery trip.*

That means the reverse vending machines are more than a service point. It's often the first touchpoint of the store experience.

When container returns are quick and convenient, shoppers move seamlessly into the store. When the process is slow or frustrating, retailers risk losing both containers and purchases.

That's why reliable technology and fast support matter. An efficient, modern reverse vending solution helps create a better customer experience, smoother store operations, and a more positive shopping journey. ✅

Plastic pollution is often thought of as something we can see. But one of the biggest challenges is nearly invisible. 🔬 https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0wHGV40

Microplastics – tiny plastic particles measuring 5mm or less – are now found throughout our oceans, in marine animals, and even in the food chain. 🌊 The majority of this pollution doesn’t start at sea, but on land.

Addressing the problem therefore means looking upstream – at how we produce, use, and collect plastic before it becomes pollution.

At TOMRA, we believe that plastic is not waste, but a valuable resource. ♻️ Systems such as deposit return schemes help keep materials in circulation through recycling, and out of nature, preventing larger items from breaking down into microplastics in the first place.

Because when it comes to microplastics, the most effective solution is not removing them from the ocean – but stopping them from getting there at all. Learn more in the article above. ☝️
