FlatCMS, our "drop-in-and-forget-it’s-there-CMS", has achieved another major milestone! 🎉
We've reached version 2.0, giving the tool a major optical overhaul in the administration UI, as well as enabling MCP connectivity, which allows you to manage not only content but also content types via your favorite AI agent like Claude or ChatGPT.
The benefits?
✦ Most importantly, FlatCMS is a very small package that can be dropped into every website or application
✦ It is able to power everything from a simple website to a full-blown software-as-a-service solution or AI agent, especially when the underlying tech is upgraded to a performant database layer
Why did we build it?
There are a lot of use cases where established content management systems like Directus, Storyblok or Payload CMS are simply overblown or lack flexibility - especially ease of use in setup and deployment.
Our package is a lightweight NPM package based on common node.js libraries and since it is fully open sourced, it allows for full transparency.
You can inspect the source code before deploying it in your application or website, exchange parts of it (e.g. the data or object storage layer) or use it as your own boilerplate for more personalized adventures.
Where FlatCMS 2.0 shines
For 2.0 (and yes, we skipped the publication of 1.0 altogether since we honestly are simply moving too fast) we focused on improving the admin user interface, ending up with a complete rewrite of the whole thing. It is now clutter-free, beautifully simplistic and doesn’t make use of pesky modal windows anymore.
We also laid the groundwork for AI by giving FlatCMS its own MCP capacity, meaning you can hook it up with Claude or ChatGPT and create structure and content directly with your agents or in your workstations without touching any user interface at all!
Where can you get it? Just hop on over to npmJS and download or fetch the package with your favorite package manager like bun, yarn or npmjs directly into a subdirectory of your project. Create two files as documented in the README and you’re set!
