Most teams set SMART goals. Very few set SMARTR ones.
Specific. Measurable. Achievable. Relevant. Timed.
We've all heard it. Most of us use it. But there's a letter missing that I've seen cost teams real progress, especially when people move on.
The R nobody talks about: Record.
I've watched solid objectives fall apart, not because they were wrong, but because they lived in someone's head, in a Slack message, or in a verbal agreement no one wrote down.
When that person leaves, gets sick, or simply forgets, the objective goes with them.
Recording your goals isn't admin busywork. It's how you:
- Keep everyone aligned on what was actually agreed
- Track real progress over time
- Protect the work from depending on one person
- Pick up where someone left off without losing momentum
So next time you set a SMART goal, add the R.
Get it in writing. Put it in your project tool, your performance software, an email thread, anywhere that isn't just someone's memory.
SMARTR isn't about micromanagement. It's about accountability that survives.
