Did you know the very banks you use today were built off the back of the slave trade? Barclays, HSBC, Lloyd’s and the Bank of England have historic connections to the slave trade, with board directors receiving compensation for their ‘loss of human property’ when the slave trade was abolished.

The debt was so vast that it wasn’t paid off until 2015, which means British taxpayers helped line the pockets of these wealthy slave owners.

Watch this video to know more:

VICE World News host Zing Tsjeng explores how City of London and it’s financial institutions profited from slavery in America long after the slave trade was abolished.
