Has your PCB supplier raised prices? But do you know if the price hike is reasonable, and how much the actual cost has increased?
Post-September 2025, the surge in copper, tin, and PP prices drove a total raw material cost increase of approximately 52 CNY/mĀ² (7.2 USD/mĀ²) for 1掔 1.6mm-thick double-sided HASL PCBs (excluding processing fees). Tin contributed the most (22.20 CNY/mĀ²), followed by PP (14.00 CNY/mĀ²) and copper (15.63 CNY/mĀ²).

For PCB customization peers, have you ever customized double-sided aluminum PCB? And have you been troubled by their delamination issues?

No matter how long youā€™ve been in the industry, itā€™s undeniable that delamination of double-sided aluminum substrates is a prevalent pain point. One of the most frustrating aspects is its storage period ā€” practical verification shows that the optimal service life of double-sided aluminum substrates is only 3 months. Beyond this period, the delamination risk rises significantly: the delamination defect rate reaches around 5% after 3 months, and surges to 40% after 6 months. This timeline requirement is often hard for customers to accept in many business scenarios.

To avoid risks from the source, here are two practical suggestions:

1. Opt for high thermal conductivity double-sided aluminum substrates to enhance structural stability and storage resistance.

2. Directly replace with double-sided copper substrates. They not only offer superior thermal conductivity but also have a much lower delamination defect rate than aluminum substrates. Nowadays, they are widely used in high-end harsh scenarios such as automotive electronics.

Worried about cost squeezes from surging copper prices? Letā€™s break down the key numbers clearly:
For mainstream 1.6mm double-sided PCBs, we use 18Ī¼m-thick copper foil (H oz/1/2 oz) for the CCL substrate. Each single layer consumes ~0.1607kg per square meter, so two layers add up to 0.3214kg/掔. Plus, the electroplating process needs 0.33kg of high-purity copper balls (ā‰„99.99% purity) per square meter. Total copper used: ~0.65kg/掔!
Hereā€™s the cost impact: Copper prices jumped from 78 RMB/kg (pre-Sept 2025) to 103 RMB/kg now. That means each square meter of PCB costs an extra ~16.29 RMB (2.32 USD) just from copper hikes!

What should I do? The client doesn't agree to the price increase! This year, the prices of gold and copper have been soaring, which has a huge impact on the cost of circuit boards. The increase in costs is real. I'm well aware that some clients are very sensitive to prices as they also have operational pressures. However, maintaining a balance between quality and cost has always been crucial in our circuit board customization business.

Some customers still don't quite understand. When the number of PCB layers, copper thickness, and board thickness are determined, the area is the main basis for pricing. Therefore, if the broken-edge design is unreasonable, it may inadvertently increase unnecessary costs.

Of course, there are exceptions due to special requirements during the SMT (Surface Mount Technology) process. For example, when the component size is too large and exceeds the actual range of the circuit board, if the broken-edge is too small, components may overlap with each other, making it impossible to perform SMT and soldering normally.

Based on our rich industry experience and professional considerations, we suggest that customers set the broken-edges on the upper and lower sides or the left and right sides, and a width of 5mm is sufficient. In this way, it can fully meet the production process requirements and effectively control costs.
