Let's start with the core conclusion: the smaller the cleave angle, the flatter the end face and the smaller the tilt angle; consequently, the lower the splice loss.

1. What is the Cleave Angle?

It refers to the deviation angle between the end face of the cleaved fiber and the perpendicular normal line. Unit: ° (degrees).
Ideal state: 0°—perfectly perpendicular and flat.

2. What are the disadvantages of a large cleave angle?

The end face is slanted or tilted, preventing the two fibers from aligning properly.
Core misalignment and mode field mismatch occur, causing splice loss to skyrocket.
It is prone to defects such as air bubbles, eccentricity, and rough spots, resulting in high attenuation and line instability.
During trunk line deployment or OTDR testing, the return loss (reflection attenuation) fails to meet standards.

3. Why is a smaller cleave angle better?

The smaller the angle → the closer the end face is to being perfectly perpendicular.
